David Payne’s 2012 Gosford Gold Cup hopeful is One Cool Cat, One Cool Cat gelding Winning Glory that is, the four-year-old opening top of the odds for Thursday evening’s showdown.
Winner of the Summer Super Saver (1900m) at Canterbury on Christmas Eve, Winning Glory was last seen coming within a long-neck of winner Straight Albert when second in the Listed Tattersall’s Club Cup (2095m) at Warwick Farm on January 2.
On Thursday they will get the chance to turn the table on Straight Albert when the duo come face-to-face again this time in the $125,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m).
While Winning Glory will again be ridden by Nathan Berry on 54kg, as they were last start, Guy Walter’s rejuvenated Magic Albert four-year-old Straight Albert goes up from 54kg to 55.5kg with Kathy O’Hara retaining the ride.
Winning Glory has also come up trumps with barrier four for the Gosford Gold Cup 2012, and as such has been installed as the $4 favourite in the early Luxbet markets.
Straight Albert, vying for their fourth win on the trot and second Cup success in three starts, follows closely in the Gosford Gold Cup odds at a price of $4.20 after drifting out from their opening price of $4.
Four other horses in the 14-horse Gosford Gold Cup field this year are currently at single-figures in the markets with:
- #4 Yulalona ($6 Luxbet) – Peter Snowden’s last-start Group 3 Summer Cup (2400m) winner has an awkward gate 11 draw to contend from, they also come back 300 metres in distance from their past two runs and how they handle these factors is key to their chances
- #1 King Lionheart ($7.50 Luxbet) – Gai Waterhouse’s consistent Al Maher five-year-old has run well at their two most recent, including a close fourth in the Tattersall’s Club Cup, but they are the 59.5kg topweight and give a bit away to some class contenders
- #8 Wazn ($7.50 Luxbet) – Widely drawn in gate 12 with suspect lead-up form, Chris Waller’s Whipper five-year-old has place claims at best here
- #12 Zoomania ($9.50 Luxbet) – Perfect barrier three draw, on the 54kg minimum, comes off a five length win at Caulfield over 2000 metres on Boxing Day, lots to like about Peter Moody’s Zabeel mare, a definite Each Way chance
