The third richest race on the BMW Magic Millions Race Day program at the Gold Coast this Saturday will be the Magic Millions Cup 2012 which has drawn a final field of 14 smart gallopers.
Due to jump at 4:05pm (QLD time) as Gold Coast Race 7, the $328,000 R.M. Williams Magic Millions Cup (1400m) is one of the meeting’s premier events and the field of acceptors features plenty of talent including three last-start winners.
Set to wear the No. 1 saddlecloth as the hefty 60kg topweight is Mark Kavanagh’s Catbird six-year-old Catapulted.
A string of close finishes during the spring, including when just over a length away fifth to Sister Madly in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day, Catapulted finally entered the winners stall last-start at Flemington on January 2.
Carrying 59kg with Michael Rodd in the mount Catapulted put an easy three lengths on their closest rival when taking out the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) after jumping from gate two.
Catapulted will again be ridden by Rodd on Saturday and also has barrier two in their favour, but they must overcome a weight that sees them carry a minimum 3.5kg more than any other Magic Millions Cup hopefuls.
Following Catapulted in the weights on 56.5kg is Wendy Roche’s known barrier rogue Here De Angels who from gate four will be looking to improve on their last-start sixth to Rain Affair in the Listed Carrington Stakes (1100m) at Warwick Farm.
The other last-start winners in the Magic Millions Cup field this year are Con Karakatsanis’s ultra-consistent four-year-old My Destiny and the Tony Gollan-trained Toowoomba galloper Spirit Of Boom.
Stratum gelding My Destiny has won five of their 10 career starts to date, their last four successively since November 1, and from the inside alley with 55kg in the MM Cup looks a genuine chance to continue the purple patch.
They come off a quarter-length victory over fellow Magic Millions Cup rival Ready To Rip in the Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on December 24 with 53kg, but showed they could handle plenty more weight having won in Sydney with up to 57.5kg in recent times.
Spirit Of Boom is also on 55kg with Ric McMahon to ride them from gate eight, the Sequalo stallion showing lots of improvement when winning the Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) at the Gold Coast track on January 2.
Saturday will be Spirit Of Boom’s third Magic Millions Day appearance.
Two years ago they jumped one of the favourites in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic after their seven length win in the Prelude a week earlier, but could only manage to finish 10 lengths away 14th to Military Rose.
Last year they enjoyed a better result when fifth to Torio’s Quest in the MM Guineas, but Gollan is hoping it is third time lucky in 2012.
Other in-form chances in the race include David Payne’s recent stable acquisition Latin News coming off three second place finishes since joining Payne’s operation last spring, the Rob Heathcote-trained Excellantes, and last year’s Magic Millions 3YO Guineas runner-up Startsmeup.
