Gai Waterhouse’s chances of securing a fourth Magic Millions Classic victory on Saturday enjoyed a boost this morning as her unbeaten filly Driefontein came up trumps with gate three in the 2012 Magic Millions 2YO Classic Barrier Draw.
Drawn live at the Surfers Paradise foreshore, the barriers for this weekend’s feature race went the way of the favourites with the top three elects in the Luxbet markets for the $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) drawing single-digit gates.
After earlier drifting out to $3.80 in the Magic Millions Classic odds, promising Fastnet Rock filly Driefontein has come back into her opening price of $3.60 after drawing barrier three for her assignment on Saturday.
A three length winner on debut at Randwick back in November, Driefontein proved herself again last start putting one and a half lengths on current MM Classic favourite Sizzling in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on December 31.
For the BJ McLachlan Dreifontein jumped from barrier four with Tommy Berry aboard, and she should get a similarly lovely run from three on Saturday as Berry vies for back to back Magic Millions wins following his success on Classic winner Karuta Queen 12 months ago.
“She will win this Magic Millions on Saturday,” Waterhouse said with confidence even before knowing the results of the barrier draw.
“I was talking to Gillian Heinrich and she thinks she’s the best thing she’s seen since her filly (Military Rose) won the race (in 2010).”
Waterhouse’s other Magic Millions Classic contender this year, No Looking Back also drew favourably and is set to start one outside their stablemate in four.
A daughter of Redoute’s Choice out of 2006 Magic Millions Classic winner Mirror Mirror, No Looking Back has had one run for one win at Warwick Farm in November and is rated a $14 chance for Saturday.
Kelso Wood’s well-backed Magic Millions favourite Sizzling also drew well with gate six for Saturday.
The market firmer at Luxbet in from $3.60 to $3.40 in the past day, Snitzel colt Sizzling has had their chances of success hampered in their two most recent runs because of bad barriers, something Wood hopes is now behind them.
From barrier three on debut at Eagle Farm in November Sizzling put an easy six lengths on their closest rival winning over 1000 metres.
They then came within a long-neck of Noogoora Burr from barrier eight of nine in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes (1000m) on December 17 before their last-start second to Driefontein after finding it hard to overcome gate 12 of 14.
Wood is sure to be rapt with the barrier having indicated a strong desire to draw in the top half of the field.
“We really want to draw a good barrier because he hasn’t been able to overcome bad barriers,” Wood said earlier in the week.
“He made up really good ground on (Driefontein) in a race which wasn’t really run at a great speed and they got away from the rest at the end last time.
“I would like to think he could turn the tables on her.
“He came through that run well and I think he could be a bit closer on Saturday from the right draw.”
Magic Millions Classic third favourite at $6.50 through Luxbet, Gerald Ryan’s last-start Sydney winner Amorino is also well-drawn in gate eight.
Other big winners at the 2012 Magic Millions 2YO Classic barrier draw included Tony McEvoy’s progressive Court Command colt Little Critter (barrier five) and the Mark Kavanagh-trained Written Tycoon filly Alezan Thunder (barrier nine) who scored a tidy four length win at Sandown last start.
Hopefuls with work to do from double-digit draws include David Lawlor’s Phelan Ready Stakes winner Noogoora Burr (barrier 12), Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic champion Hoss Amor (barrier 11), the Liam Birchley-trained BJ McLachlan Stakes third placegetter Snipzu (barrier 13) and Bruce Hill’s Gold Coast winner last Saturday Lady Colours (barrier 15).
