2012 Bat Out of Hell Winner Carry To Fortune

Smart local mare Carry To Fortune gave their Gold Coast trainer Sandra O’Sullivan her biggest career win as a trainer to date on Saturday when they raced away to take out the Bat Out Of Hell Handicap 2012.

Bat Out of Hell winner Carry To Fortune is headed towards the 2012 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival

The Carry The Flag five-year-old was racing first-up in the $100,000 Bat Out Of Hell Handicap (900m) at the Gold Coast, Carry To Fortune going out as a $21 roughie after drawing the extreme outside barrier 12 of 12.

But a masterful ride by jockey Glen Golless saw the mare burst out of the barriers and race away to an impressive one and three-quarter length win over the Kelso Wood-trained Seek And Find ($5.50) while equal $5 favourites Reilly Blue and Inventory finished third and fourth respectively.

“That’s easily the biggest win I’ve ever had,” O’Sullivan said.

Carry To Fortune has now raced 23 times for six wins earning $160,550 in prize money for connections including breeder-owner Jock Bremmer.

O’Sullivan, 61, who has been training horses for four decades, the last three of which have been spent at the Gold Coast, said they were always confident of Carry To Fortune’s ability to win the Bat Out of Hell.

“I wasn’t even too disappointed when she drew the outside barrier because she is a little flyer,” O’Sullivan said.

“Once she got up to the front I was always sure she would win.

“She’s such a brilliant mare when she’s fresh and that was no surprise at all.

“She never looked like getting beaten and I’m absolutely thrilled.”

Upcoming plans for the underrated sprinter could now include a run in the $80,000 Listed Lightning Handicap (1000m) at Eagle Farm on June 9 during the 2012 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
