2012 Doveton Stakes winner Chasm

Perhaps Chasm had one of the most profitable losing runs of any horse racing in Australia.

Saturday’s Listed 2012 Doveton Stakes (1200m) winner at Caulfield had gone 33 months without winning a race.

His previous win came in the Listed Auckland Stakes (1610m) at Flemington on April 25, 2009.

But during that 23 run losing streak, he earned $282,400 in prizemoney from eight placings in high class races.

On Saturday, having his first start for new trainer Brendan McCarthy, the seven-year-old turned back the years.

And it didn’t come unexpected in the 2012 Doveton Stakes.

Chasm was backed from $11 to $8.50 with Luxbet and scored by the narrowest margin.

At the 100m mark, the 2012 Doveton Stakes winner was hard to gauge with five horses spread across the track.

At the end Chasm defeated Stirling Grove by a nose with Second Effort third.

Just one and a half lengths separated the first five over the line in the 2012 Doveton Stakes.

Chasm was formerly trained by Heath Conners.

He lost the horse only because he moved from Caulfield to train at Geelong.

Owner Neil Wilson believed his horse was better suited at Caulfield.

McCarthy used to attend to Chasm when Conners had him.

Chasm has back problems that need constant care.

“He’s a big muscular horse who hits the ground hard,” McCarthy said.

“They can often put their backs out.

“I’ve probably treated him three or four times this preparation.”

McCarthy has been a horse manipulator for over 20 years.

The 2012 Doveton Stakes was led by the Anthony Freedman trained First Command Luxbet $3.60 favourite.

Jockey Jamie Mott had a soft run while Cat’s Pyjamas Luxbet $3.70, sat off him in second.

However, Cat’s Pyjamas raised the white flag at the turn as Second Effort Luxbet $9 joined the leaders.

At 100m First Command, Stirling Grove, Cascabel, Second Effort and Chasm had live chances.

Cascabel Luxbet $6.50, could not finish off but a head separated the other four at the 50m mark.

Wilson remained happy with Chasm all through his ‘dry’ patch.

“You don’t always have to win to enjoy, just the experience of getting close is good and then days like this make it all worthwhile,” he said after the race.

Chasm has won nine races from 40 starts and bunked his prizemoney to $761,113.
