A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
Caulfield’s inaugural 2012 race meeting is set to take place this Saturday and odds on the day’s black-type feature, the 2012 Doveton Stakes, have been released with slick South Australian sprinter Stirling Grove opening at the top of the early markets.
Scheduled to run as Caulfield Race 5 at 3:30pm (VIC time), the $100,000 Robert Taranto Doveton Stakes (1200m) boasts a smart final field of eight summer gallopers.
After drawing nicely in gate four, Richard Jolly’s resuming Mossman four-year-old Stirling Grove leads the Doveton Stakes odds at Luxbet at a quote of $3.40.
Last seen running second to Down Under Boy in a 1400 metre handicap at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day during the spring, Stirling Grove boasts a strong sprint record at Caulfield having run a brave third to superstar Black Caviar in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes (1000m) at the track back in October.
They also won over the Doveton Stakes track and distance last February, which was their first run at Caulfield.
Following Stirling Grove in the Doveton Stakes betting at Luxbet are then four other runners at single-figures making this a wide open affair for the punters.
Close second favourite is defending Doveton Stakes champion First Command, the 59kg topweight paying $4 to go back-to-back in the stakes showdown.
A specialist at the track, the Commands six-year-old was outclassed in the Group 2 Gilgai Stakes (1200m) when seventh to Temple Of Boom at Flemington back in early October, but returning to Caulfield the Anthony Freedman-trained First Command is out to secure their fourth black-type win at the track.
The other main chances are then the Clinton McDonald-trained local Second Effort ($5.50 Luxbet) who won four straight sprints over 1200 metres in Victoria last winter, Robbie Griffiths’ in-form Cranbourne galloper Cascabel ($6.50) and the Mark Kavanagh-trained mare Cat’s Pyjamas ($7) who comes off a strong win at the track and distance carrying more weight.
As for Bel Esprit six-year-old Cascabel, Griffiths is hoping the horse can put an end to a frustrating succession of three straight second place finishes and score their first turf triumph since April last year.
Cascabel backs up less than a week after being beaten three lengths when runner-up to Catapulted in the Group 3 Standish Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on Monday, and Griffiths is wary of how they will go running in their third run in just 12 days.
“He always backs up well a week apart but we have never done three in a row, especially coming off a hot day like he faced this week,” Griffiths said.
“He is very consistent and deserves to win one of these races.
“He is not as good as Catapulted and First Command is also a better horse than him when he is on song.
“The others in the race are at a pretty similar level so if he is okay we will roll the dice.”
