2012 Gosford Gold Cup Weights Released

Today Racing NSW released the handicaps for next Thursday’s Gosford Gold Cup 2012, Gai Waterhouse’s Group 2 winning galloper King Lionheart topping the weights for the popular provincial clash.

King Lionheart

King Lionheart has been allocated the 59.5kg topweight of the 2012 Gosford Gold Cup entries

One of 19 summer stayers nominated for the $125,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) this year, Al Maher five-year-old King Lionheart has been allocated a hefty 59.5kg for the January 12 showdown.

A winner of six of their 16 starts to date King Lionheart’s most notable career success so far came in the Group 2 Shannon Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill back in September last year.

For the Shannon Stakes King Lionheart carried just 52kg to victory but they proved they could handle extra weight the previous start when winning over the same track and distance with 58kg on their back.

Last start they ran a brave fourth when beaten under two lengths by Straight Albert in the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2095m) at Warwick Farm on January 2, carrying the same 59.5kg weight they will at Gosford should they accept.

For their Tatt’s Club Cup victory, the Guy Walter-trained Straight Albert carried just 54kg with Kathy O’Hara in the mount, the in-form Magic Albert four-year-old to rise one and a half kilos to 55.5kg as they attempt a fourth straight success in the Gosford Gold Cup.

Following King Lionheart in the 2012 Gosford Gold Cup weights are the Bjorn Baker-trained Mr Tipsy (56.5kg) who was disappointing when beaten 14 lengths crossing ahead of just one other runner in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on Boxing Day, and Mr Tipsy’s stablemate, Pins mare Sharp Princess (54.5kg).

Joining Straight Albert on 55.5kg are then Tim Martin’s Zabeel seven-year-old Scouting Wide coming off a Summer Cup sixth and the well-performing Peter Snowden-trained four-year-old Yulalona who rises 2.5kg from the 53kg they carried to win the Summer Cup ahead of a number of the other Gosford Gold Cup entries.

The only other runner allocated more than 54kg is then the John O’Shea-trained Legsman with 54.5kg, the Pins six-year-old to advantage from the drop back from 54.kg they had when a close third to Straight Albert in the Tatt’s Cup last-start.

Last year’s Gosford Gold Cup placegetter Alexander Of Hales is one of the 54kg lightweights, just half a kilo more than the Chris Waller-trained veteran had when finishing third to Keepin’ The Dream in the feature 12 months ago.

Others on 54kg include Tatt’s Club Cup runner-up Winning Glory and the Peter Moody-trained Zoomania who won by five lengths at Caulfield over 2000 metres on December 26.

“We are very happy with the strength of the (Gosford) Gold Cup nominations,” Gosford Race Club’s CEO James Heddo said.

“Apart from the classy topweight (King Lionheart) there are three last start city winners in Yulalona, Straight Albert and Zoomania.

“It is shaping up as a very competitive event.”
