He was one of the most hyped horses of the spring carnival but Smart Missile failed to live up to expectations when it counted leaving trainer Anthony Cummings scratching his head and plenty of punters with much lighter wallets.
To top it all off he ended his campaign with an injury that seemed likely to keep him out of action until mid 2012.
Now though Cummings is hoping that won’t be the case and Smart Missile may be good to go at some stage during the Sydney autumn carnival.
The horse is currently recovering from the hind leg injury at Gooree Stud where he’s expected to stay until the end of January.
“We have decided to take the conservative approach and give him the necessary time that he needs to get right,” Cummings said.
“The plan was to go to Melbourne for the big sprints but that is out of the question now.
“The advice from the vets is that he should be OK for a return during the Randwick carnival, which opens up the possibility of travelling to Queensland for a race like the Stradbroke.”
After their failed experiment and stretching him out over ground Smart Missile will be kept for sprint events throughout next preparation.
A race like the Group 1 Galaxy over 1100m at Randwick on April 21 seems the likely start point.
Connections were expecting big things in the spring after Smart Missile returned with a huge win in the Group 3 Run To The Rose.
After that he could only manage a second to Manawanui in the Golden Rose before failing badly at his next two starts down in Melbourne.
