Kiwi Raider Travino Confirmed for 2012 Magic Millions Classic

Matamata-based New Zealand trainer Peter McKay has confirmed plans to travel across the Tasman with his dual stakes winning colt Travino for Saturday week’s BMW Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day, the promising two-year-old to target the Magic Millions Classic 2012.

One of the best tried youngsters heading into the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m), the son of General Nediym has raced five times to date in New Zealand winning his three most recent runs on the trot.

After a classy three and a half-length victory at Te Rapa over 1000 metres on November 5, Travino has continued to impress connections and pay out for the punters winning the Listed Murdoch Newell Stakes (1100m) at Pukenhoe and the Listed Wentwood Grange Stakes (1100m) at Te Rapa last-start on December 10.

Proving they had lost none of their flair, Travino was an impressive track galloper at their home course yesterday morning, convincing McKay to press on with Magic Millions plans.

McKay rode the horse himself in the workout in which Travino, currently New Zealand’s top-rated two-year-old, got the better of an untried stablemate over 600 metres.

“He had some time off after his last win and he’s done really well since then,” McKay said.

“He’s booked to fly to Sydney on Saturday and he’ll head up to the Gold Coast two days later.

“That should give him enough time to get over the trip.”

The 2012 Magic Millions Classic field of final acceptors is out on Monday followed by the live barrier draw from the Surfers Paradise foreshore on Tuesday morning.
