Monday’s Tatts Club Cup winner at Warwick Farm Straight Albert will be given the chance to add a fourth straight win to his impressive recent record in the 2012 Gosford Gold Cup on Thursday week according their trainer Guy Walter.
Warwick Farm-based Walter has been in charge of Magic Albert four-year-old Straight Albert’s preparation since the start of last year’s spring season, the galloper having previously been prepared by Michael Dobie.
Since joining Walter’s operation Straight Albert has raced five times, winning his third on the trot on Monday with a narrow long-neck victory over the David Payne-trained Winning Glory, John O’Shea’s Legsman third, in the Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2095m) with Kathy O’Hara in the mount.
O’Hara was also aboard Straight Albert for their Goulburn Gold Cup victory back on November 18, while Hugh Bowman rode the improving champ for his Warwick Farm win over the mile on December 17, a race Straight Albert successfully contested after missing out on a start in the Villiers Stakes.
“He showed great courage to fight back and win,” Walter said on Monday.
“He gave us the impression racing at a mile that he would be suited to further and it’s nice to see that vindicated today.
“Really, he’s gone from strength to strength.”
Straight Albert is now likely move onto the $150,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) on Thursday January 12, seeking their third Cup victory in four starts and their seventh overall career success.
“We might press on to the Gosford Gold Cup,” Walter said.
Other summer stayers expected to feature in the 2012 Gosford Gold Cup entries this year include Monday’s Tatts Club Cup third placegetter Legsman and Peter Snowden’s Boxing Day Summer Cup winner Yulalona.
