Following the reluctant withdrawal of the injured Combat Kitty from Magic Millions Guineas 2012 contention last week, Wyong Magic Millions Stakes winner Safusa has been installed at the top of the futures markets for the upcoming Gold Coast clash.
In the latest odds for the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m), running as one of the major features of the 2012 BMW Magic Millions Race Day at the Gold Coast on January 14, the David Pfieffer-trained Safusa is the $4.80 favourite through Luxbet.
The Elusive Quality gelding burst into contention for the lucrative showdown after posting their third career win from six starts, and their second straight over 1200 metres, when winning the Wyong Magic Millions 3YO Stakes by an easy two lengths over Angel Of Mercy on December 22 after overcoming barrier 12 of 12.
Although as yet untested over the Gold Coast Magic Millions Guineas distance of 1400 metres, connections and the bookies are confident Safusa has emerged as the three-year-old to beat on Saturday week.
Safusa will be out to hand their Warwick Farm-based trainer Pfieffer his second Magic Millions Guineas victory adding to that of Graceful Anna back in 2010.
Graceful Anna also won the Magic Millions Wyong Stakes as a three-year-old before her Gold Coast Magic Millions triumph back when then Guineas was registered as the 3YO Trophy, the now five-year-old also winning the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) on Boxing Day in between the MM double.
Following Safusa in the latest 2012 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas odds at Luxbet are then four other horses under $10 with:
- The Gai Waterhouse-trained Sandown Guineas runner-up Niagara ($8)
- Gerald Ryan’s Angel Of Mercy ($8.50)
- The Chris Waller-trained Hoylonny ($9)
- Peter Balzen’s Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate winner on New Year’s Eve Punch On ($9)
After running second to Safusa in the Wyong Magic Millions Stakes, Hussonet filly Angel Of Mercy went on to win the Schweppes Plate (1300m) at Warwick Farm in impressive style on Monday.
Putting three and a half lengths on her closest rival Miss Milanese, Angel Of Mercy boosted her total career earnings to just under $50,000 putting her right on the edge of a Magic Millions Guineas start.
“I’m hoping she has enough prize money to get her into the Guineas but it will be touch and go,” Ryan said.
“If she gets a run, she will be very hard to beat because this is a really good filly.
“I’ve always had a big opinion of her.”
Meanwhile Hoylonny also enjoyed a Warwick Farm win on Monday, the Lonhro colt narrowly holding on to beat home Soledad by a long neck in a Benchmark 70 over 1300 meters first-up.
Despite being one of the best fancied of the Magic Millions Guineas qualified horses, however, Waller confirmed they would bypass the January race date in favour of preparing for a Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival campaign.
