One of the biggest events of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival, the Group 2 Perth Cup, is due to run at Ascot racecourse on Saturday December 31, 2011.

Local star Ranger is paying $6 to win the 2011 Perth Cup and is on the third line of betting for the race at Luxbet.

Ranger failed to stay in the CB Cox Stakes last start and it appears likely he will not go on to the Perth Cup on New Year’s Eve.

“I don’t think he can turn it around,” owner Bob Peters said yesterday.

“He was beaten by those other horses on equal weights. How can he beat them with four or five kilos more?”

Ranger has won six of his 19 race starts and has earned more than $520,000 in prize money.
