Mr Tipsy Tops Summer Cup Weights 2011 – Sydney Boxing Day Races

Weights for the Sydney Boxing Day Races at Rosehill Gardens have been released by Racing NSW including those for the 2011 Summer Cup, the Bjorn Baker-trained Kiwi raider Mr Tipsy the top-weighted of the nominees.

One of 15 gallopers vying for a spot in the final field for the $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2400m) this coming Monday, seven-year-old Montjeu gelding Mr Tipsy has been allocated 58kg meaning they will wear the No. 1 saddlecloth should they be accepted for by the now Warwick Farm-based Baker.

A winner of nine of their 33 starts to date, Mr Tipsy was last seen finishing three and a half lengths away seventh to Dawn Ghost in the Group 2 Waikato Times Gold Cup (2400m) at Te Rapa in New Zealand when carrying a hefty 59kg from the extreme outside gate 18 of 18.

Prior to that they had a better run at Pukekohe in November when coming within a half-neck of victory in the Group 2 DHL Counties Cup (2100m).

The veteran’s latest win was back on September 18 at Pukekohe, Mr Tipsy relishing the muddy Heavy (10) conditions to win the Listed Karaka Classic over the mile with Oppie Bosson in the mount.

Mr Tipsy hasn’t campaigned in Australia since February this year when they raced in the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2200m) finishing 13th to Bid Spotter before heading to Melbourne where they ran a credible third beaten less than a length by Pergola in the Moonee Valley Night Cup (2500m).

A genuine staying type, Mr Tipsy’s most memorable run down under was in the 2009 Sydney Cup when they finished one and three quarter lengths third to the Colin Little-trained Ista Kareem in the Group 1 Randwick two-mile feature.

Officially prepared in New Zealand by Baker’s father Murray, Mr Tipsy will race solely under Bjorn’s name on Saturday.

“Mr Tipsy is a grand old horse and very much a stable favourite,” Baker said.

“I think he’s been unlucky not to get a Group win in Australia and he deserves one.

“Hopefully it comes on Monday; I think it is a winnable race for him.”

Mr Tipsy is expected to stay on in Australia to contest the $150,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) on January 12.

Following Mr Tipsy in the 2011 Summer Cup ballot and weights are then the Craig Ritchie-trained Solid Billing who ran third in this year’s Sydney Cup and Chris Waller’s Danehil Dancer gelding Strike One looking to bounce back after their dismal run in the Rosehill Christmas Cup back on December 10, both on 57.5kg.

Just two other hopefuls have been allocated more than the 53kg minimum for the Summer Cup this year with the Tim Martin-trained Zabeel seven-year-old Scouting Wide (56.5kg) and John Thompson’s Christmas Cup third placegetter Count Encosta (53.5kg).

Horses sitting outside the 13-starter field limit on the Summer Cup ballot are Bart Cummings’ recent Kembla Grange winner Pegembak and the Guy Walter-trained Cyber Crime, the duo to be installed as emergencies for the race if there are no withdraws at acceptance stage on Thursday.

Stay tuned to to view the 2011 Summer Cup final field and barrier draw once released tomorrow.
