Guy Walter’s smart four-year-old Straight Albert may have missed out on a Group 2 start on the weekend after being balloted out of the Villiers Stakes, but a consolatory victory at Warwick Farm on Saturday has connections eyeing the 2012 Gosford Cup for the son of Magic Albert.
Before the Ron Quinton-trained Monton held off Gai Waterhouse’s stablemates Kontiki Park and King Lionheart to win the $175,000 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at the ‘Farm’, Straight Albert scored a tidy win in Warwick Farm Race 2 – the $70,000 Jim Beam Handicap (1600m).
In a smart finish over the John McNair-trained import Irish Jig, Straight Albert earned a shot at black-type glory next month with Walter, who only acquired the horse at the start of the spring, naming a duo of stakes targets for the up-and-coming gelding.
Firstly the galloper is set to return to Warwick Farm for the $100,000 Listed Tattersalls Club Cup (2100m) on January 2 before going into the $150,000 Listed Gosford Gold Cup (2100m) on January 12.
“I’m fortunate to get him,” Walter said.
“He is a lovely horse and his future is over further.
“The plan is to start him in the Tatt’s Cup at Warwick Farm and then the Gosford Cup.
“He is racing very well and those races look ideal.”
Saturday’s win boosted Straight Albert’s career record to five wins from 16 starts for over $208,000 in prize money.
It was also their second win on the trot following a narrow victory over Scottish Border in the Goulburn Cup (1600m) back on November 18.
