Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
One of the crucial 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic lead-up races is set to run at Wyong this Thursday, December 22, but which horse will wear the No. 1 saddlecloth is up in the air with equal top-rated entries Amorino and Fundido likely to bypass the race.
The $200,000 Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1100m) is one of the biggest events on the end of year Sydney racing program and serves as an ideal guide for Luxbet punters ahead of the $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) in mid-January.
In fact, the Wyong – Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic double was taken out in the 2010-11 season by Neville Layt’s star filly Karuta Queen.
Nominations for the 2011 Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic were taken by Racing NSW last Friday with 23 two-year-olds making up the entries.
Two share the No. 1 position on the ballot with Gerald Ryan’s Snitzel colt Amorino, a two and a half length winner in the City Tattersalls Plate at Randwick on debut back on October 15, and the Chris Waller-trained Fundido.
Leading Sydney-based horseman Waller has indicated his Lonhro colt Fundido is likely to withdraw in favour of a Boxing Day race assignment at Rosehill on December 26.
After beating a class field in their first career run over 1100 metres at Rosehill back on December 3, Fundido stormed into Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic contention and is still one of the shortest-priced favourites paying $8 in the Luxbet markets.
Waller has indicated he also has bigger fish to fry naming the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill on Easter Saturday, April 7, as an ambitious autumn aim for Fundido.
“If you have a horse that you think could realistically finish in the first three of the Magic Millions, then you would like to think they would be good enough to compete in a Golden Slipper,” Waller said.
“The Golden Slipper is a long way away but you have to start planning for it now because you don’t want to be rushing to get enough prize money to make the field.
“He is already qualified for the Magic Millions and I’d like to try and get more prize money in the bank if possible.
“Any prize money that he would earn at Wyong doesn’t count towards the Golden Slipper.
“I nominated just to keep our options open but at this stage he will run on Boxing Day before going to the Gold Coast.”
Waller has two other Magic Millions Wyong Classic entries in unraced Magic Albert colt Another Lovechild and General Nick who ran a disappointing ninth on debut last Saturday at Kembla Grange.
“Another Lovechild is promising but not as good as Fundido at this stage,” Waller said.
“He hasn’t raced yet but he trailed nice.”
It is a similar story for Amorino who is also rated an $8 chance in the futures Magic Millions Gold Coast 2YO Classic odds at Luxbet.
Amorino will trial at Rosehill on Tuesday before Ryan makes a firm decision of whether or not to run at Wyong.
“I’ve got three options in mind with him but I won’t make a decision what we do until after the trial,” he said.
“We could race at Rosehill on Boxing Day or on December 31 and there is also a race at Doomben the same day.”
Following Amorino and Fundido in the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic ballot are then John Thompson’s Calaway Gal Stakes runner-up at Eagle Farm on Saturday Dysfunction and Thoroughbred Breeders Plate runner-up Hidden Warrior.
Prepared by Paul Perry in Newcastle, Hidden Dragon gelding Hidden Warrior came within a nose of Gai Waterhouse’s Pierro in the Listed 1000 metre feature on October 1 and is tipped for a nice return on Thursday.
“He is a lovely clean-winded horse who comes to hand quickly,” Perry said.
“Last time in he was one dimensional, jump and run, but this time he has showed us he has got gears, he can settle, he doesn’t have to lead.”
Hidden Warrior is also the next shortest-priced of the Wyong Classic entries in the Gold Coast Magic Millions 2YO Classic betting markets at a quote of $16 through Luxbet.
Another top nominee in this Thursday’s feature is the Tony McEvoy-trained Little Critter who has been confirmed as a definite acceptor with Glyn Schofield to ride.
After running second on debut at Morphettville on October 8, Court Command colt Little Critter broke their maiden status at the same track on October 29.
Schofield is yet to ride them under race conditions but was aboard Little Critter for their smart four length barrier trial win over 800 metres at Warwick Farm on December 15.
“I thought he was going really well before the trial so it was just great to see him take to his Sydney leg and he wasn’t extended to win,” McEvoy said.
“It’s (the Wyong Magic Millions Classic) is the perfect race for him, being 1100 metres, on his way to 1200 metres next month and we’re really hopeful of a good result.”
Little Critter is currently paying a juicy $26 in the Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic markets at Luxbet, a price that is sure to firm should they win Thursday’s assignment.
Other notable Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic nominees that could feature in the final field, due for release on Tuesday, include Emirates Airline Plate third placegetter Alezan Thunder and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fastnet Rock filly Sherocksmyworld.
