Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Peter Snowden’s perennial placegetter Rarefied has opened at the top of the 2011 Razor Sharp Handicap odds, the consistent Commands five-year-old well liked to take out the Warwick Farm feature this Saturday on Villiers Stakes Day.
Due to jump at 3:45pm (NSW time) as Warwick Farm Race 5, the $100,000 Listed McGrath Razor Sharp Handicap (1200m) features a small but quality field of nine sprinters with Rarefied the current $2.30 favourite at Luxbet.
Drawn in barrier six with Nash Rawiller to ride, Rarefied is out to break a three-race second-placegetting streak.
He returns to Sydney having run a nose away second to Sister Madly in the Group 2 Salinger Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Derby Day and then most recently finishing runner-up to Ortensia in the Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) in Perth.
Hot on Rarefied’s heels in the Razor Sharp Handicap betting at Luxbet is market mover Catapulted.
The 59kg topweight of the field, Mark Kavanagh’s Group 2 winning six-year-old may be giving a lot of weight to some quality rivals, but this hasn’t stopped the punters coming for them with Catapulted firming in from $4.20 to $3.90 at Luxbet.
After running a credible fifth in the Salinger Stakes, Catapulted comes into Saturday’s showdown on the back of a second to Canali in the Victoria Cup (1100m) at Caulfield on December 3 where they also carried a big weight (60kg).
Two other Razor Sharp hopefuls are at single figures in the markets with the Joe Pride-trained Recorrido ($7.50 Luxbet) who won first-up at Rosehill last start and Paul Perry’s Newcastle galloper Stratana ($8.50 Luxbet).
Drawn in gate eight with Corey Brown engaged for the ride, Stratana is out for their third win from four starts, the four-year-old gelding last seen running third to Saturday’s Villiers Stakes first emergency My Destiny over 1300 metres at Rosehill on December 3.
“He tried his insides out,” Perry, who also prepared Stratana’s sire 2005 Golden Slipper winner Stratum, said of their last run.
“He’s been very consistent, very honest.
“He is the sort of bloke who is a pleasure to train.”
Prior to that they won back-to-back races at the track over 1200 metres, and while they see Warwick Farm for the first time in the Razor Sharp, so do many of their rivals who don’t have the same impressive record over the distance.
With Warwick Farm currently rated in the Slow range, Perry is sweating on sunny skies to help firm the track up in time for Saturday’s race.
Stratana has only finished out of the money once in their nine starts to date which was when they encountered a Heavy (9) track at Canterbury back in June.
“He doesn’t like it too wet,” Perry said.
If successful Stratana will hand Perry his third Razor Sharp Handicap victory following in the footsteps of Prince Braeman (2009) and Chester County (2003).
