The premier event for punters happening this weekend is the Villiers Stakes 2011 running at Warwick Farm as part of the Sydney Summer Racing Carnival, and bookies around the country have now opened markets on the handicap showdown.
Scheduled to run as Warwick Farm Race 6 at 4:25pm, the $175,000 Group 2 Inglis Villiers Stakes (1600m) features a full field of 16 starters plus three emergencies, five of which are at single-figure odds in the Luxbet markets.
Currently, thanks to an early market move, #14 Lightinthenite is the Villiers Stakes betting top elect having firmed in from $6 to $5.50 at Luxbet.
Drawn in barrier 10, but moving into the ideal gate seven draw if the three emergencies come out, the John O’Shea-trained Lightinthenite comes off a string of eye-catching runs.
After narrowly holding on to win a Benchmark 85 over 1500 metres at Rosehill last month, the Galileo four-year-old was last seen running half a length away second to Monton in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) on December 3.
They are well-weighted on 52kg on Saturday with Christian Reith to ride, while Festival Stakes winner Monton is at longer odds of $9.50 at Luxbet to score back-to-back black types having drawn a horror gate 18 and being forced to carry the equal 58kg topweight.
Following Lightinthenite in the Villiers Stakes odds are then:
- #3 Shadowfax ($6.50 Luxbet) – Mark Kavanagh-trained six-year-old last seen finishing a close second over 1400 metres at Caulfield a fortnight ago from a wide barrier with a big weight, they are drawn well here in barrier nine (possibly into six) and drop 4kg with ace hoop Glyn Schofield in the mount
- #1 King Lionheart ($8.50 Luxbet) – One of two runners for Ms Gai Waterhouse, has 58kg which is a big weight but they have barrier two which will suit and will be keen to improve on their seventh in the Festival Stakes, winner at the track and although mile is a bit iffy the punters like them
- #17 My Destiny ($8.50 Luxbet) – Only needs one scratching to come into the field, plenty of love for the well-bred son of Stratum who has won three on the trot in Sydney, haventy seen Warwick Farm or the mile and jump from 1300 metres to 160 metres, but they have the right draw and weight to be competitive
Other notable hopefuls at longer odds include Peter Snowden’s former Group 1 winner Erewhon ($10) coming off a dead last in the Group 3 Eclispe Stake (1800m) at Sandown, the Gary Portelli-trained local hope won at Rosehill last Saturday in fine style and boast a strong record over the mile New Day Rising ($10) and Tim Martin’s Festival Stakes fifth placegetter Fibrillation ($12).
