Ranger’s 2011 Perth Cup Start Hangs on CB Cox Stakes

Early Perth Cup 2011 betting favourite Ranger will need to prove he is ready for another shot at the testing 2400 metre clash by putting in a strong performance in this Saturday’s CB Cox Stakes at Ascot.

Grant Williams’ Testa Rossa gelding Ranger has seen the 2400 metres just once before when finishing eight lengths away 11th to Guest Win in the 2011 Perth Cup back on New Year’s Day.

With a second official 2011 Perth Cup to run on New Year’s Eve this year due to a rescheduled Ascot Summer Racing Carnival, Ranger could get a chance to show their improvement.

One of 44 early entries for the $400,000 Group 2 Perth Cup on December 31, seven of which come from the stables of Williams, five-year-old Ranger is leading the futures betting on the feature.

Sitting at the top of the Perth Cup odds at Luxbet at a quote of $4.60, Ranger yesterday was allocated the 58kg top weight of the entries, a full six kilos more than they had on their back for their first Perth Cup appearance and two kilograms more than stablemate, 2010 Perth Cup winner Lords Ransom with 56kg.

In piping hot form this season Ranger will look to secure their Perth Cup acceptance running in the $225,000 Group 2 C.B. Cox Stakes (2100m) this Saturday.

Drawn ideally in barrier four with regular rider William Pike engaged, Ranger is set to open the CB Cox Stakes favourite at Luxbet and will need to salute for the punters to prove to guarantee a Perth Cup start.

“Whether Ranger runs in the (Perth) Cup depends on how he goes on Saturday,” owner Bob Peters said.

Peters also expressed his disappointment in Lords Ransom still being rated 105 despite the Jeune eight-year-old not having finished better than seventh in their five starts since taking out the 2010 Perth Cup with 55.5kg.

“He has dropped only two points despite having been unplaced at five starts since he won the Perth Cup in January 2010,” Peters said.

Peters owns all seven of the Williams-trained Perth Cup nominees.

Following Ranger in the markets are stablemates Tranquility ($5.50), Lords Ransom ($6.50) and Battle Emblem ($8), all three also set to run in the 2011 CB Cox Stakes this weekend.

Betting on the Perth Cup is now open at Luxbet making now the time to lock in your early favourites before markets firm following this weekend’s Perth race results.
