This year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic runner-up Combat Kitty could be back at the Gold Coast next month targeting the prestigious 2012 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas first-up in an ambitious new season program being considered by her Sydney-based trainer Matthew Smith.
Lightly raced General Nediym filly Combat Kitty has raced eight times to date for two wins and four minor placings for over $440,000 in prize money, a nice result for connections who paid $150,000 for her at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sales in 2010.
Combat Kitty became a stakes winner on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington taking out the Listed Lexus Hybrid Plate (1400m) but was disappointing last start when she finished sixth to Secret Liaison in the Listed Twilight Glow Stakes (1400m) at Sandown on November 12.
Spelled after that run Combat Kitty is back in light work with Smith considering a return to racing at the Gold Coast BMW Magic Millions Race Day on January 14 in the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).
Combat Kitty was last week one of 146 eager three-year-olds nominated for the 2012 Magic Millions 3YO Guineas, Smith indicating that she would likely go straight into the race with only one or two trials as preparation.
“She’s back in good shape and will be ready to trail next week,” Smith said, referring to a trial at Rosehill Gardens next Tuesday.
“Depending on how she comes through she might only have another trial after that before going into the race.
“She is not an overly-gross filly and she’s clean-winded so it won’t take much to bring her to her top again.
“If she has a big blow after the trial I’ll look for a race.”
In early Magic Millions Guineas betting markets Combat Kitty has opened the narrow favourite over the Gai Waterhouse-trained stablemates Niagara, last seen running a close second in the Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m), and Just The Tonic who has won two of their three starts to date.
