Ice Skating Towards Third Straight – Just Now Quality 2011 Field & Preview

Les Kelly’s Gold Coast galloper Skating On Ice will shoot for their third win on the trot at Eagle Farm this Saturday, the in-form mare looking to extend her purple patch of form with a victory in the 2011 Just Now Quality.

One of 13 fillies and mares accepted for the $80,000 Listed Just Now Quality (1300m), Bradbury’s Luck four-year-old Skating On Ice took her career record to six wins from 15 starts taking out back-to-back races in Brisbane last month.

Skating On Ice had three consecutive stakes race assignments during the Queensland Winter Racing Carnival earlier in the year, her best result being a third to Military Rose in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).

Her most recent turf triumph came in the David Jones Class 6 Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm on November 26 where she put a minimum one and a half lengths on her rivals.

One thing Kelly is hoping for ahead of Saturday is a dry Eagle Farm track, Skating On Ice performing their best on Good – Dead ground.

“A wet track is the last thing she needs,” Kelly said.

Looking at the form guide, Skating One Ice has had one start on a slow track finishing third and one start on Heavy ground when running second, which on paper doesn’t look bad.

Kelly, however, knows that she won’t advantage on a track rated worse than Dead.

“Once she gets past a dead track she’s not as effective and I’m just hoping Brisbane misses the rain,” he said.

On Saturday Skating On Ice will jump from barrier nine of 13 in the Just Now Quality, a win in which would be the horse’s first black-type triumph and one that Kelly believes they have in them.

“She’ll be right at her top for the Just Now and she’ll go on after that into the Goldmarket Handicap,” he said.

The $100,000 Listed Goldmarket Handicap (1300m) is set to run at the Gold Coast on January 2, and her early runs next year could determine whether she is stepped up to elite level for the 2012 Winter Stakes.

“I think Skating On Ice is an ideal type for the Winter Stakes,” Kelly said.

“I’ve got no doubts she can run 1600 metres and the 1400 metres of the Winter Stakes is perfect for her.”

It is a quality field set to line up in the 2011 Just Now Quality, other top contenders including the Rex Lipp-trained Dual Chamber coming off a close first-up fourth to Zero Rock in the Listed Travel Associates Classic (1200m) with a nice barrier two draw, and Bruce Hill’s Sequalo four-year-old Madame Sleeper also drawn ideally in gate three.

Meanwhile another Gold Coast horseman Bryan Guy will shoot for their second straight win in the Just Now Quality following Beyonce’s Star’s success 12 months ago.

Guy will be represented on Saturday by Luminous Harmony (barrier 11), the Fastnet Rock five-year-old having her first start since their Doomben race fall back on November 30 that sidelined jockey Larry Cassidy.
