The Doomben Cup 2018 takes centre stage in...
While most of the punters’ attention will be focused on the 2011 George Moore Stakes at Doomben on Saturday, another headline event on the Brissy race card worth a look at is the $100,000 Listed Mode Plate (1200m), odds for which are now out at the bookies.
Due to jump at 3:35pm as Doomben Race 6, the 2011 Mode Plate field features a capacity 16 starters plus one emergency with the Luxbet markets currently dominated by two fillies.
Narrow favourite to emerge the Mode Plate winner on Saturday arvo is Kelso Wood’s resuming Ferocity filly Lucky Morna ($3.70 Luxbet) while Greg Bennett’s visiting Sydney galloper Charm’s Honour is only just behind them in the betting at a quote of $3.80.
Drawn well mid-field in barrier seven with the state’s leading hoop Chris Munce booked for the ride, Lucky Morna races for the first time since their eighth in the Listed Lancaster Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm back in June.
Despite coming off a lengthy break and having only won one of their six starts to date, Lucky Morna’s sole turf triumph was also their only start on a Heavy track when they ran away to put over three lengths on their closest rival over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm back in April.
With Doomben currently rated a Heavy (8) and the rain continuing, the bookies are taking no chances with the known mudlarks explaining Lucky Morna’s favouritism in the markets.
Mode Plate second elect Charm’s Honour is another filly with strong wet track form having won her sole start on Slow ground, while from two starts on Heavy going she has recorded a second and a third.
Saturday will be the daughter of Strada’s third run for the season after two close thirds in Sydney first-up beaten only a quarter length by winner Ingham Magic over 1200 metres at Randwick and then last-start by a nose on a Heavy (9) Canterbury track on November 26.
Other fillies in the Mode Plate field and markets under double figures are Barry Baldwin’s five-time winner Saraji ($4.40 Luxbet) who posted an easy win at the Sunshine Coast on a Heavy (8) track back in October, and the former Sydney-trained Hollyweird ($6.50) making her Queensland debut.
There are just three other runners under $20 with Todd Austin’s Foreplay filly Playtime ($11 Luxbet), last-start Rockhampton winner Divine City ($12 Luxbet) and progressive Sequalo three-year-old Ticket To Dream ($13 Luxbet).
Meanwhile, former Magic Millions winning training Gillian Heinrich has three Mode Plate acceptors including the emergency Moroccan Dancer.
Her other two runners are Military Grace in gate two and Pensive Dream out wide in barrier 15, both at the bottom end of the markets paying $41 and $101 respectively at Luxbet.
Military Grace was one of the boom two-year-olds of last year winning the black-type Calaway Gal Stakes – BJ McLachlan Stakes double back-to-back in December before her failure when 14th to Karuta Queen in the 20101 Magic Millions 2YO Classic.
Since then Military Grace has failed to finish better than sixth in her five starts, the General Nediym filly last seen running ninth to Mode Plate rival Saraji at Doomben on November 19, a career of mixed results that has Heinrich scratching her head.
“She won a couple of Listed races as a two-year-old but she didn’t fire for some reason as a three-year-old, but fillies can do that,” she said.
“There’s nothing wrong with her but I’m not sure why she didn’t come up last campaign.
“I’m not sure how to rate her last run when she lost a plate.”
While her recent form leaves a lot to be desired, one thing that is firmly in Military Grace’s favour is her ability to handle a Heavy track, which she displayed in the BJ McLachlan run on a Heavy (10).
“She loves wet tracks and if she wins then we’ll probably take the Magic Millions road,” Heinrich said speaking of the $1 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) held as part of the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day next January.
“She doesn’t like hard tracks so hopefully she’ll go better on a heavy track.”
