Festival of Perth Racing – 2011 Lee Steere Classic Field & Preview

This Saturday the Perth Summer Racing Carnival will continue at Ascot Racecourse with the running of the Lee Steere Classic 2011 which has drawn a final field of 11 hopefuls.

Due to run as Ascot Race 5 at 3:45pm (local time) on Saturday, the $125,000 Group 3 Sir Ernest Lee Steere Classic (1400m) is one of two Group race features running this weekend along with the 2011 George Moore Stakes in Brisbane.

It is a class field of gallopers engaged for the Lee Steere this year, the field led by Peter Giadresco’s last-start winner Watermans Bay.

The Eternity Range three-year-old entered the winners stall for the third time when taking out the Listed Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) over boom favourite Night War on November 26.

They are back on Saturday seeking back-to-back stakes victories, Watermans Bay likely to open at the top of the Lee Steere markets at Luxbet having come up trumps with barrier two.

Beaten Placid Ark Stakes favourite Night War will seek revenge on Saturday, trainer Simon Miller also accepting them for the Lee Steere Stakes 2011.

Jumping from barrier eight with Patrick Carbery in the saddle, the General Nediym filly will be looking to return to her Group 2 Karrakatta Plate winning ways and will advantage from the drop back in weight from 57kg in the Ark to just 54kg on Saturday.

The other last-start winner in the field along with Watermans Bay is Daniel Morton’s lightly-raced Born To Excel who will be ridden by gun local hoop William Pike from barrier nine.

Exceed And Excel colt Born To Excel has won two of their three starts to date, most recently running away to put one and a half lengths on their rivals in the Westspeed 3YO Handicap (1200m) on November 23 carrying 57.5kg.

Last weekend’s Kingston Town winning trainer Neville Parnham, who scored his second straight win in the Classic with successful defending champ Playing God, will seek more Group glory this Saturday with two Lee Steere runners.

Parnham will be represented by Snippetson filly Pure Heaven in barrier one while stablemate Almachino, last seen finishing three lengths away seventh to subsequent Kingston Town Classic third placegetter King Saul in the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) at Ascot on November 19, will jump from gate five.
