Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Last-start Kingston Town Classic runner-up Ranger heads the list of 2011 CB Cox Stakes nominations, the early entries for Saturday week’s Ascot feature released by Perth Racing on Tuesday.
The penultimate Group race held during the Perth Summer Racing Carnival, the $225,000 Group 2 C.B. Cox Stakes (2100m) is set to run on December 17 and works as either a season grand final for gallopers, or a nice lead-up race to the 2011 Perth Cup on New Year’s Eve.
Trainer Grant Williams boasts the largest number of CB Cox Stakes nominations this year, his in-form Testa Rossa five-year-old Ranger one of seven entries.
Three of Williams’ other hopefuls also come via a run in the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) from last Saturday with Battle Emblem (fourth), Tranquility (sixth) and Lords Ransom (seventh).
His other most notable CB Cox Stakes-bound galloper is former Perth Cup fourth placed Western Jewel, beaten one and three quarter lengths when ninth to Veracious in the Listed JRA Trophy (2200m) last Saturday, while Catbird mares Moonlight Bay and Forever Special round out the contingent.
All seven stablemates are owned by the same connections, well-known WA owner-breeders Bob and Sandra Peters.
Other CB Cox Stakes nominees coming via a Kingston Town Classic start include Ivan Haggety’s Big Ted (eighth) who ran third in the Cox last year, the Mark Reed-trained country cups hero Kincaple (ninth) and Ascot Gold Cup third placegetter Mega Steel who failed to beat home any other runners.
Meanwhile the Trevor Andrews-trained Veracious will take their next step towards the $400,000 Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) by racing in the CB Cox Stakes, the Systematic four-year-old already exempt from Perth Cup ballot thanks to their gritty win in the JRA Trophy where they had a mere nose to spare over John Thompson’s Sydney raider Saint Encosta on the line.
Encoasta De Lago five-year-old Saint Encosta will get their chance at revenge having also been nominated for the CB Cox Stakes, as has JRA Trophy third and fourth placegetters New Spice and Double Barrel, both finishing within a length of Veracious.
Nominations were also taken for the Perth Cup 2011 today with 41 stayers heading towards the end of year clash.
