The key support act on Doomben’s George Moore Stakes Day program in Brisbane this weekend will be the $100,000 Listed Mode Plate (1200m) for three-year-old fillies.
Attracting 20 early entries at nomination stage on Monday, the 2011 Mode Plate is shaping up as an exciting race for the fans and Luxbet punters with plenty of talent among the nominees.
Some of the headline hopefuls include the Gerald Ryan-trained Sydney raider and regular stakes runner Hollyweird, Group 1 TJ Smith third placegetter Playtime, Kelso Wood’s resuming Lucky Morna, Gillian Heinrich’s dual black-type winner Military Grace and Trevor Whittington’s progressive Gold Coast filly Gift Of The Day.
There are plenty of provincial gallopers making their way into town for Saturday’s feature summer meeting as well including the Garnett Taylor-trained Divine City fresh off a four length win at Rockhampton, Mark Webb’s last-start Toowoomba winner Embellish and Gregg Bennett’s Scone-based filly Charm’s Honour.
Strada three-year-old Charm’s Honour has earned a trip to Brisbane and to a black-type after running consistently in Sydney over her seven-start career to date which has produced a trio of wins.
After winning on debut at Muswellbrook in November of 2010, Charm’s Honour made it two from two when winning at Armidale on a Slow (7) track by an easy five lengths this March.
Racing her best in the wet, but also very able on dry tracks, Charm’s Honour’s most impressive run to date was her close second to subsequent Group 1 Coolmore Flight Stakes winner Streama in the Listed Keith Mackay Handicap (1200m) at Randwick in April on a bog track.
“The Keith Mackay run wasn’t a fluke,” Bennett said.
“It took Streama the length of the straight to run her down.”
She has had two runs for the season finishing less than half a length away third in both, first at Randwick then at Canterbury over 1250 metres last start on November 26.
“I could have taken her to Sydney again this week but she would have got too much weight,” Bennet said.
“It’s a nice little set weights race in Brisbane worth a bit of coin and there’s the black-type as well.
“She’s already got some black-type with her Keith Mackay placing but obviously a bit more won’t hurt.”
Final fields for the Mode Plate and the $200,000 Group 3 George Moore Stakes (1200m) will be released on Wednesday and published here at Races.com.au.
