After an impressive first-up triumph in the Travel Associates Classic at Eagle Farm on Saturday, Kelso Wood’s smart six-year-old mare Zero Rock looks on-song for a tilt at the 2012 Magic Millions Cup on the Gold Coast next month.
Despite a few tense moments, the daughter of Danzero showed that class goes a long way when she was able to fight back after losing the lead to battle home and snare a quarter-length victory over perennial second placegetter Liesele, Mossriver finishing third, in the Listed Travel Associates Classic (1200m).
It was Zero Rock’s resuming run after her bumper Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign earlier in the year, which included a third in the $1 million Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m).
Boosting her impressive record to 11 wins from 26 starts for a tickle under $895,000 in prize money, Zero Rock will next move onto Doomben in three weeks’ time for the $200,000 Listed Lough Neagh Stakes (1350m) on December 24.
If successful Zero Rock will have completed the same Brisbane summer stakes double she did 12 months ago when saluting in Travel Associates Classic and Lough Neagh Stakes back-to-back.
At the start of the year Zero Rock also went on to race at the Gold Coast’s famous BMW Magic Millions Raceday running a close second to Bold Glance in the Magic Millions Cup.
Wood said that should everything go to plan the $400,000 Magic Millions Cup (1400m), run on January 14 next year, would again be Zero Rock’s grand final aim for the summer.
The Magic Millions Racing Carnival was something Zero Rock’s owner David Devine was very much looking forward to, as he could also be represented on the day by boom Snitzel colt Sizzling in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).
“The 1400 metres of the Gold Coast race will be perfect for her now,” Devine said of Zero Rock heading towards the 2012 Magic Millions Cup.
“We could have a massive day that day.”
The 2012 Magic Millions Race Day nominations will be taken over two days, the first of which falls this Friday, December 9, for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Magic Millions 3YO Guineas.
The day’s other events, including Zero Rock’s target race, close on Tuesday January 3, 2012.
