It may have been a frustrating week for Brisbane’s premier horseman Rob Heathcote, but his honest staying type Racing Heart gave him something to be excited about, the five-year-old earning a Magic Millions Stayers Cup 2012 assignment after their brave win at Eagle Farm over the weekend.
After losing boom summer hope Simmering to injury late last week, Heathcote also missed out on a black-type success on Saturday when his last-start Brisbane Handicap winner Fillydelphia ran third in the Recognition Stakes.
Earlier in the day, however, Show A Heart gelding Racing Heart got a win for the stable when breaking their 2400 metre maiden status in the Southbank Insurance Brokers Handicap.
In a thrilling finish Racing Heart was able to hold off the odds-on favourite, Galileo gelding Rundle, and deliver an upset result.
“Maybe that’s a bit of lady luck,” Heathcote said.
“I’ve had a tough week, but that’s how racing goes.”
The victory was also the second on the day for sire Show A Heart whose five-year-old daughter from Zoffany mare Zoquita, Heart To Fear, won the Carlton Mid Country Cup (1200m) with Chris Munce in the mount.
Racing Heart, now a nine-time winner for over $300,000 in prize money, had only been to the 2400 metres once before when they finished a disappointing 11th in the 20102 Queensland Derby as a three-year-old.
Proving their staying potential on Saturday, Racing Heart will now progress onto the 2012 Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day on January 14 to contest the $200,000 Magic Millions Stayers Cup (1800m).
“I will give him a week in the paddock and then start him in a 2020 metre race on December 31 before going into the Magic Millions Stayers Cup two weeks later,” Heathcote said.
Heathcote also ended the day on a high with his well-tried four-year-old mare Hidden Kisses taking out the last, the Carlton Draught Class 6 Handicap (1400m), which was the race the sidelined Simmering was originally to race in.
One of the most popular days of racing held in Queensland each year, the 2012 Magic Millions Raceday nominations for the highlight events – the Magic Millions 2YO Classic and Magic Millions 3YO Guineas – close this Friday December 9.
