Carry Me Bluey Carries onto 2011 Bernborough Handicap

Progressive Toowoomba-based four-year-old Carry Me Bluey may have missed out on their maiden black-type when going down the beaten favourite in Saturday’s Tattersall’s Recognition Stakes, but their narrow loss lost them few admirers and trainer Norm Hilton will continue onto the Bernborough Handicap 2011 with the horse.

Chris Munce could again partner with Carry Me Bluey for the 2011 Bernborough Handicap on New Year's Eve

The improving Carry The Flag gelding had no luck in the Listed Recognition Stakes down the Eagle Farm mile, jockey Chris Munce doing everything in their power to salute for the Luxbet punters.

There was just a nose separating the odds-on favourite from eventual winner Wonderful Lass, Hilton disappointed with not winning but more than happy with Carry Me Bluey’s performance seeing as the came off a win over 1350m at Doomben and were going up to the 1600 metres at Eagle Farm.

“He was going up from 1350 metres to a mile and probably had to go a bit too soon at the home turn,” Hilton said.

“He raced really well and I can’t see any reason to change our plans.”

Carry Me Bluey, a winner of six of their 18 starts to date for just over $150,000 in prize money, will get another chance to score a stakes victory when their summer campaign culminates with a run in the $200,000 Listed Bernborough Handicap (1615m) at Doomben on New Year’s Eve, December 31.

“He’ll run again in a fortnight and then go to the Bernborough Handicap at the end of the month,” Hilton confirmed.

Looking further ahead, Hilton hopes Carry Me Bluey lives up to his expectations and earns a 2012 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival assignment, with the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 21 the grand aim.

“I still think he’s good enough to take to Sydney next year,” Hilton said.
