2011 Festival Stakes winner Monton a first for Clipperton

Sydney apprentice Sam Clipperton  piloted his first stakes winner when Monton Luxbet $16 won the Listed 2011 Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

The 17-year-old gave the Ron Quinton-trained gelding a ride beyond his years.

Clipperton replaced senior rider Chris O’Brien (indisposed) on the morning of the race and Quinton, his master, engaged him for the ride.

“Deep down I really wasn’t that happy about him riding Monton because there was a lot of pressure on him,” Quinton said.

“It was not an easy job for the lad, he’s not an easy horse to ride. One alley helped him, but he did a good job.”

Clipperton positioned Monton on the fence, behind the early leaders Visa Las Luxbet $26 and Mentality Luxbet $51.

He then pushed out at the turn giving Nash Rawiller aboard 2011 Festival Stakes favourite King Lionheart Luxbet $3.50 a shove out of the way.

That horse hadn’t been traveling well and went backwards from that point.

Monton raced to the lead and comfortably held off a late challenge by Lightinthenite Luxbet 7.

Lightinthenite settled sixth but was left flat-footed when the field sprinted at the home turn.

His rider, apprentice Josh Adams followed Clipperton through but couldn’t mount a serious threat in the final stages.

Viva Las battled well for third while Circle Of Power Luxbet $8.50 had every possible chance in the 2011 Festival Stakes.

He settled on the fence midfield and was clear in the straight but couldn’t finish it off.

The run of Kontiki Park Luxbet $9 should be forgiven as he was caught three wide with no cover throughout.

Quinton is aiming Monton for the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on December 17.

The upcoming Villiers Stakes always provides value. Just like Luxbet who are giving double the value on initial deposits.
