Following Monday’s release of the 2011 Kingston Town Classic field, bookmakers around Australia have updated the odds and markets on the country’s final elite level showdown, upset Railway Stakes winner Luckygray the short-priced favourite.
Second over the line to Kiwi raider He’s Remarkable in Perth’s richest race, the Railway Stakes on November 19, the Gino Poletti-trained Bradbury’s Luck four-year-old Luckygray was eventually awarded the Group 1 win upon protest.
The victory boosted the emerging star’s record to seven wins form nine starts, Luckygray having now won over $875,000 in prize money.
It has been a simply sensational Perth Summer Racing Carnival for Luckygray and connections, the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) that they won by an easy three and a half lengths on October 29 having originally been their grand final aim.
Now they are looking down the barrel of becoming a dual Group 1 hero at just their 10th career start when they take their spot in the $500,000 GR Engineering Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot on Saturday.
Despite having been up since September, having suffered a few cuts and bumps in the Railway run and never having been to the 1800 metres before, Luckygray is the clearcut favourite in the 2011 Kingston Town Classic odds at Luxbet.
Of the accepted 15-horse field, 14 of which remain in the running with Ladysea withdrawn, Luckygray leads the betting at a quote of $2.60.
There are just two other hopefuls at single-figures with Grant Williams’ Lee Steere Stakes victor Ranger who comes off a sixth as the beaten favourite in the Railway, ($4.20 Luxbet) and WA Guineas winner King Saul ($4.60 Luxbet) who is the 52kg lightweight of the field.
Following the top three Kingston Town Classic betting favourites are then the likes of Mark Reed’s country cups hero Kincaple ($12 Luxbet), Grant Williams’ consistent Redoute’s Choice mare Tranquility ($13 Luxbet), defending winner Playing God ($17 Luxbet) and Mark Webb’s Victorian visitor Avienus ($19 Luxbet).
The Kingston Town Classic barriers are due to be released today with Races.com.au to publish the draw.
