Injury Puts Snow Fairy Out Of 2011 Hong Kong Vase Contention

News - International Racing - Race Previews
29 November 2011

Trainer Ed Dunlop has withdrawn Snow Fairy from the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase 2011 next month after she sustained an injury while training at Sha Tin Racecourse.

While it is currently not known whether the injury is career-threatening, Dunlop has chosen to fly Snow Fairy back to her home stables in Newmarket as soon as she is well enough to travel.

“It is with great disappointment that we report Snow Fairy suffered an injury this morning at Sha Tin racecourse whilst doing a routine canter,” Dunlop said.

“It’s a bitter pill. We’ll get her home and assess the situation.

“As I’m in Newmarket and she’s over there, I don’t really know the extent of the injury yet.

“All I know is it’s bad enough to say that she won`t be able to run and we`ll make any further decisions when she’s home.”

Snow Fairy is a five time Group 1 winning mare and had been in the hunt to become the first horse to win both the Hong Kong Cup and Hong Kong Vase.

The four-year-old had displayed her top form when winning the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes in Japan earlier in the month for the second consecutive year.

That win took her career earnings to more than £4 million.

Snow Fairy has won five of her 19 starts since beginning her career in 2009, with victories in the Ladbrokes St Leger and the Darley Yorkshire Oaks amongst them.

Despite the absence of Snow Fairy, Dunlop will still be represented by his other stable star Red Cadeaux in the Hong Kong Vase.

Red Cadeaux finished heartbreakingly close in the $6 million Melbourne Cup on November 1, 2011, finishing second to Dunaden in what was the smallest winning margin in the race’s 151 year history.

Dunlop is also currently dealing with the loss of over 20 horses from his stables following Rabbah Bloodstock unexpectedly ceasing its involvement with the trainer.

While Snow Fairy is out of the 2011 Hong Kong Vase, don’t miss your chance to back one of the many talented runners still left in the race.
