Munce Sizzling for 2012 Magic Millions Classic

Sizzling and Chris Munce

Sizzling and jockey Chris Munce will team up again in the 2012 Magic Millions 2YO Classic

Ace jockey Chris Munce will shoot for his fourth Magic Millions Classic success at the 2012 BMW Magic Millions Race Day on the Gold Coast in January having committed to ride the Kelso Wood-trained Sizzlingin the $2 million juvenile’s feature.

Munce, a winner of nearly two dozen Group 1 features in Australia, first claimed Magic Millions Classic success back in 1989 with Sunblazer before his win aboard Excellerator (2001) and most recently Dance Hero (2004).

In between Sunblazer and Excellerator Munce missed out on the winning Magic Millions Classic ride on 1994 champion Brave Warrior when replaced by late great Neil Williams after injuring himself during the summer.

It is Brave Warrior in fact that his 2012 Magic Millions Classic hope Sizzling most reminds Munce of.

Snitzel colt Sizzling was an emphatic winner on debut at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago defeating a quality field by a commanding six lengths with Munce in the mount, the youngster’s jockey and trainer both keen to get them back to the track under race conditions and see if they can repeat their incredible maiden performance.

The victory was in fact a class record, Sizzling running the 1000 metres in a blistering 57.43 seconds leading Wood to declare him as one of the best two-year-olds he had ever trained.

Purchased for $260,000 at this year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Sizzling was just that in their only run to date and looked the ideal candidate to help return on their purchase price for connections in the $2 million Magic Millions Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 14, 2012.

Eagle Farm-based horseman Wood will be vying for his official first Magic Millions Classic win despite having prepared first-over-the-line Prince Regent in 1988, the former sprint star having been regulated to second upon protest to Molokai Prince.

Having recently undergone heart bypass surgery, Wood is back in the stable hands-on preparing for the summer riches in Brisbane and said Sizzling was working well towards their Magic Millions assignment.

“He’s coming along well and is pretty good,” Wood said.

“I wish I was as good as him.”

Leading up to the Magic Millions Race Day 2012 Sizzling is set race in the $100,000 Listed Phelan Ready Plate (1200m) at Eagle Farm on December 17 and the Group 3 B.J. McLachlan Plate (1200m) at Doomben on New Year’s Eve, December 31.

“I’ll give him a barrier trial at Doomben next week then he’ll have two runs before the Magic Millions,” Wood said.
