Jetconi the 2011 Wodonga Cup winner

Jetconi the 2011 Wodonga Cup winner

While the Luxbet betting on the 2011 Wodonga Cup was wide open, Jetconi $8,  made a one act affair of the race.

It was Jetconi’s second Wodonga Cup having survived a protest to maintain the 2010 running.

Between Cups, Jetconi had placed in two city races but didn’t win a race in 15 starts.

It all changed at the Wodonga, track he loves the best .

Jockey Jason Benbow used barrier one to good effect.

He settled the seven-year-old three back on the fence while Flagstaff Luxbet $41 led and set a quick pace from Luxbet $151  bolter Top Tier.

The Adelaide visitor Cornish Luxbet $9 had no luck three wide without cover in the Wodonga Cup of 2011.

His jockey Libby Hopwood pushed him up to the leaders approaching the turn but he faded.

At that point Benbow squeezed a gap between the two leaders and rode hard to the line.

Second placegetter Murdoch’s Joy Luxbet $4.60 fav, was gallant after being blocked for a run rounding the turn.

Its jockey Linda Meech had no choice but to follow the path made by Benbow until the 250m mark.

Meech pulled out wide in the straight on Murdoch’s Joy and it finished strongly with Regular Aussie Luxbet $7.50, holding on for third in the 2011 Wodonga Cup.

Jetconi’s win was a triumph for Mansfield trainer Gerald Egan who planned a repeat Wodonga Cup win after 2010.

Egan gave credit to his stable staff for the satisfying win.

“It is great, no protest his year which is even better,” he said.

“I said to Jason, have him fll bore at the top of the corner, the last two starts he had been held up.

“With the good weight and brrier we had to make the most of it and go for home.

“He has run 12 seconds in own and not won there but it is better winning here anyway.

“At his first two runs (this campaign) he was big and fat but we gave him four runs before the Cup
this year and only three last year.

“It is a team effort and I am proud of them.”
