Frank Underwood Cup 2011 Odds & Betting

It is a wide-open affair for punters betting on the 2011 Frank Underwood Cup at Canterbury this Saturday, half of the field opening at single-figure odds in the recently released markets.

Yulalona is one of the three opening favourites for the 2011 Frank Underwood Cup this weekend

There are 13 confirmed stayers in the $100,000 Listed Canterbury BMW Frank Underwood Cup (1900m) this year, six of these hopefuls under $10 in the Luxbet markets for Canterbury Race 6 at 4:20pm (local time) on Saturday.

Three horses currently share favouritism at a quote of $6.50 in the Frank Underwood Cup odds at Luxbet with:

  • #4 Miss Keepsake (Joseph Pride) – On the 53kg minimum, comes off solid form this season including her close third in the Listed Belle of the Turf Stakes over the Gosford mile in October, step up in distance should suit
  • #10 Zara Dancer (Jim & Greg Lee) – Comes off a close fourth behind the likes of Strike One and Levi’s Choice – both also running in the Frank Underwood – over this distance at Rosehill on November 12, this former Kiwi will like it wet and being in gate 11 will work in their favour if the showers around Sydney continue
  • #12 Yulalona (Peter Snowden) – Prepared by one of the best in the business, this four-year-old comes off a sixth in the Hawkesbury Gold Cup and the 1900m will be better, fourth in the Queensland Derby during the winter and has run well on a Heavy (10) before at Caulfield

Following the three top elects are then Chris Waller’s last-start Rosehill winner over the distance Strike One and the John O’Shea-trained Winter Cup winner Legsman both paying $8.50, and Gai Waterhouse’s Teardrop Rock at $9.50.

Fastnet Rock mare Teardrop Rock is looking to return to her good form of 2010 after a disappointing run in Melbourne during the spring, the four-year-old beaten nearly 17 lengths with 12th to Vintedge in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day.

Longer-priced contenders with a genuine chance in the Frank Underwood Cup this year include the John Thompson-trained Count Encosta ($11 Luxbet), Wyong galloper Gazza Guru ($11 Luxbet) with solid form in Sydney prior to their disappointing last-start 11th to Strike One, Goulburn Cup runner-up Scottish Border ($15), Levi’s Choice ($14 Luxbet) who was nosed out of a win by Strike One last start and Joe Pride’s second representative Tom’s Rocket ($16 Luxbet).

Rounding out the 2011 Frank Underwood Cup field and betting are then Graeme Rogerson’s Parramatta Cup third placegetter Barlagarney ($31) and $61 roughie Solid Billing, worth a sneaky place bet through Luxbet despite their poor recent runs and 57kg topweight as they like a soft track as shown when running third to Stand To Gain in the Sydney Cup back in April.
