Tonight the latest black-type race to take place in Tassie will run at Launceston Racecourse with the 2011 Tasmania Newmarket Handicap headlining a quality nine-event twilight program.
With the emergencies officially withdrawn, the $90,000 112th Country Club Tasmania Newmarket Handicap (1200m) field features 14 sprinters that will face off in Launceston Race 7 at 9:25pm (local time).
Two horses currently dominate the Tasmania Newmarket Handicap odds at our preferred online bookmaker Luxbet with Socks the narrow $4.40 favourite over Punctuate at a quote of $4.60.
Drawn on the rails in a barrier one, George Blacker’s Keep The Faith four-year-old Socks races first-up after a lengthy spell, the galloper having pulled up lame and rested for 10 months following their 10th to Ludka in the Listed Hobart Guineas (2100m) back on January 23.
Prior to their failed Hobart Guineas run Socks took out a top field in the Listed Tasmanian Guineas (1600m), and the punters are keen to get behind them in a successful return to the track tonight.
Punctuate has also come up trumps in the Tasmania Newmarket Handicap barrier draw, the David & Scott Brunton-trained Invincible Spirit four-year-old coming off an eye-catching second first-up behind Dash For Magic in the Goodwood Handicap (1100m) at Hobart on November 6 where they also jumped from gate three of 14.
Goodwood Handicap winner Dash For Magic is also set to back up in tonight’s Tasmanian feature race, Vicki Rhind’s galloper paying juicy double figures at a $10 quote through Luxbet after drawing the horror outside barrier.
Behind the two top elects there are another two hopefuls at single-figure odds in the Luxbet markets with the former Kris Lees-trained Motspur and Obstinado both paying $7.50.
Veteran Flying Spur nine-year-old Motspur will be having just their second start for new trainers Charlie Goggin and Luella Meaburn, having run three lengths away seventh in the Goodwood Handicap for their Tasmanian debut.
Also drawn in double digit gates to jump from barrier 11 is another one of the five horses representing the Bruntons, Obstinado well liked in the markets having won back-to-back races in September and October before their narrow last-start second behind Mr Fashion – an $11 chance in tonight’s race – in the Novas Architectural Handicap (1100m) at Launceston on October 27.
Aside from Obstinado and Punctuate the other Brunton-trained runners in the field are 60kg topweight and winner of the 2009 Tasmania Newmarket Handicap Life To The Full ($11 Luxbet), Winter Handicap champion Faye Commands ($34 Luxbet) drawn ideally in gate two, and seven-year-old Lightly Spiced ($21 Luxbet) drawn wide in gate 13.
Other notable acceptors for the 2011 Tasmania Newmarket Handicap include resuming Geegees Blackflash ($16 Luxbet) last seen running second in the Clarence Cup in August, Goodwood Handicap runner-up Western Wager ($16 Luxbet) and last year’s third placegetter Lyell ($17 Luxbet).
