Frank Underwood Cup 2011 Field & Barrier Draw

The 2011 Frank Underwood Cup final field of acceptances and barriers have been released ahead of the staying showdown running at Canterbury this Saturday, Ginga Dude, as expected, withdrawing from contention.

Graeme Boyd’s class Kiwi Ginga Dude was allocated 61kg as the topweight of the $100,000 Listed Frank Underwood Cup (1900m), the hefty allocation seeing Boyd fail to accept for the off-season showdown.

Ginga Dude, last seen running sixth to Rothera in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) at Sandown on November 12, will instead be saved for the Villiers Stakes 2011, the Group 2 mile feature running at Warwick Farm on December 17.

With Ginga Dude withdrawn, Craig Ritchie’s Sydney Cup third placegetter Solid Billing, who needs a wet track to be a danger, is the new 57kg topweight for Saturday.

Two of the 13 other horses in the Frank Underwood Cup final field are handicapped over the 53kg minimum with the Chris Waller-trained Strike One (56.5kg) to be ridden by Glyn Schofield from barrier one as they seek back-to-back Sydney wins for the season, and the John O’Shea-trained Pins six-year-old  Legsman also drawn on the inside with gate two.

It will officially be the second 2011 Frank Underwood Cup held this calendar year as the race was rescheduled from its traditional time and venue at Rosehill in mid-January, the event an ideal lead-up for stayers heading towards popular Sydney races later in the year such as the $100,000 Listed Christmas Cup (2400m) at Rosehill on December 10 and the $125,000 Listed Summer Cup (2400m) a fortnight later.

Trainers with multiple hopes in the race include Joe Pride who will be represented by his former Kiwi mare Miss Keepsake (barrier eight) and five-year-old Tom’s Rocket (barrier 12); and John Thompson who has accepted for Group 2 winner Count Encosta (barrier six) and Galileo four-year-old Levi’s Choice (barrier 13).

Other notable acceptors include Stephen Farley’s Craven Plate and Newcastle Gold Cup third placegetter Gazza Guru drawn nicely in barrier three, Hawkesbury galloper Scottish Border coming off a close second in the Goulburn Cup on November 18 and the consistent Savabeel gelding Zara Dancer.
