Randwick Boxing Day Races 2011 Transferred to Rosehill

The countdown is well and truly on until the famous Boxing Day races in Sydney this summer, and for punters wondering what happened to the Randwick Boxing Day races, they have been transferred to Rosehill for 2011.

Last year's Summer Cup winner Spechenka

Held the day after Christmas on Monday December 26, the Boxing Day race program that is usually held at Royal Randwick will take place at Sydney’s other premier racing venue, Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.

The highlight race on the 2011 Rosehill Boxing Day schedule is $125,000 Group 3 Summer Cup (2400m).

A handicap showdown for the end-of-season stayers, the 2011 Summer Cup nominations close on Tuesday December 20 and the final field of acceptances is then due for release on Thursday December 22.

The Summer Cup, won last year by Ben Ahren’s Queensland raider Spechenka, is also the final Group status race of the year held in Sydney.

One galloper that could be among the contenders in this year’s Summer Cup field is Kerry Parker’s progressive Domesday four-year-old Nextanix.

Beaten favourite in the Goulburn Cup (1600m) on November 18, Nextanix finished under two lengths away fifth to Straight Albert and could be given the chance to prove their staying potential with a Summer Cup start.

The other major long distance clash held in the off-season in Sydney is of course the $100,000 Listed Christmas Cup (2400m).

Also held at Rosehill, the Christmas Cup 2011 runs on December 12, Chris Waller’s Bellagio Wynn having taken out the classic last year.

Many gallopers that could contest the Christmas Cup and or the Summer Cup 2011 feature will first take part in the $100,000 Listed Frank Underwood Cup (1900m) this Saturday at Canterbury including the Chris Waller-trained Strike One who ran second in the Summer Cup last year, this year’s Sydney Cup third placegetter Solid Billing, Tim Martin’s Zabeel seven-year-old Scouting Wide and the John O’Shea-trained Winter Cup winner Legsman.

Also on-way to the 2011 Christmas Cup is the Steven Englebrecht-trained Reset six-year-old Assertive Billy.

After winning a 2000m feature at Rosehill as a $101 roughie on October 29, Assertive Billy posted another victory this time over 2200m at Warwick Farm on November 19 earning the 40-start veteran a crack at black-type glory in the Christmas Cup.

“I think you’ve nearly got to have a crack at a Christmas Cup now,” Englebrecht said after their Warwick Farm win.

“It falls nicely into his program.

“The 2400 metres shouldn’t be a worry and it would be a nice race for him.”

Races.com.au will continue to provide readers with all the essential summer racing field and betting updates on the black-type races.
