Tattersall’s Cup Winner 2011 New Spice

Elva Van Merwyk’s patience with their injury-prone eight-year-old New Spice was rewarded at Ascot on Super Saturday with the Old Spice gelding scoring their first turf triumph in nearly two years with a an upset win in the 2011 Tattersall’s Cup.

Last seen finishing ninth in the Ascot Gold Cup first up after a nine and a half month break, New Spice was back to their best on Railway Stakes Day, the gallant old galloper saluting in their fourth stakes success and ninth career win taking out the $80,000 Listed Tatersall’s Cup (2100m).

In a well-timed ride by Ryan Hill, New Spice ($61) overcame barrier 13 of 14 and on the line had one and three quarter lengths to spare over Michael Morton’s mare Peg’s Pride ($11) while the Grant Williams-trained Knightlike ($9) snared third in a photo for the final placing.

The fellow Williams-trained Western Jewel ($6) came from last to fourth, just nudged out of the top three, while race favourite Gum Nut Guru ($4.80) was officially awarded fifth after seemingly crossing the line simultaneously with Western Jewel and Knightlike.

It was an emotional win for part-time trainer Elva Van Meryk who was happy to have her former Group 1 Kingston Town Classic third placegetter return to the form they were in before their trip to Melbourne back in 2008.

“He’s had so many issues but I knew coming into this race he was as good as possible, it looked like he had returned to his old self,” Van Meryk said.

The action of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival continues at Ascot this Saturday with the $80,000 Listed Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) before the 2011 Kingston Town Classic finishes off the Group 1 action on December 3.
