Tasmania Newmarket Handicap 2011 Field & Barrier Draw

Leading up to the 2012 Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival in January and February of next year, the Apple Isle have a host of black-type features running over the coming months starting with the 2011 Tasmania Newmarket Handicap this Wednesday, November 23 at Launceston.

Running as race seven of nine on the evening race program, the $90,000 Listed 112th Country Club of Tasmania Newmarket Handicap (1200m) has this year drawn a capacity field of 14 starters plus five emergencies.

Back for a second shot at glory in the time-honoured Tassie showdown is defending Tasmania Newmarket Handicap winner Obstinado, one of five acceptances for Seven Mile Beach-based training duo David and Scott Brunton.

The now five-year-old Estambul gelding Obstinado won the Newmarket Handicap 12 months ago in their first stakes assignment.

On Wednesday Obstinado will defend their title, looking to continue their recent string of good runs that included an impressive five and a half length victory in the St Virgil’s Handicap (1100m) at Hobart on October 16.

Obstinado was last seen finishing a nose away second to Mr Fashion in the Novas Architectural Handicap (1100m) at Launceston on October 27 where they carried 58kg to victory, but they must pull out all the stops on Wednesday after coming up with an awkward barrier 14 draw.

Last year’s third placed Lyell also returns for another go on Wednesday, Barry Baker’s Tough Speed six-year-old resuming from lengthy seven month spell.

Topweight of the Tasmania Newmarket Handicap 2011 field is one of Obstindado’s four accepted stablemates Life To The Full, runner-up in the race two years ago, on 60kg.

They are followed in the weights by the former Kris Lees-trained Motspur on 59kg, the veteran Flying Spur nine-year-old having just their second start for new trainers Charlie Goggin and Luella Meaburn.

Along with Obstinado and Life To The Full, the Brunton’s have also accepted for resuming Commands mare Faye Commands, seven-year-old Lightly Spiced and last-start Goodwood Handicap third placegetter Punctuate in the Tasmania Newmarket Handicap this year.

Other noteable sprinters engaged for the feature include Clarence Cup runner-up last time out on August 28 Geegees Blackflash, the in-form Leon Laskey-trained Mr Fashion seeking their third win for the season and last-start Goodwood Handicap winner Dash For Magic who suffered a blow drawing barrier 19 of 19.
