The Ivan Haggerty-trained Grey Monarch enjoyed the first black-type triumph of their 52-start career at Ascot’s Super Saturday over the weekend, the seven-year-old galloper storming home to win the Carbine Club of WA Stakes 2011.
Recently re-sold for $65,000 to current owner Allan Barnes at the 20101 Magic Millions Perth Winter Thoroughbred Sales, Verglas gelding Grey Monarch boosted their total career earnings to over $406,000 in prize money with their victory in the $80,000 Carbine Club of WA Stakes (1400m) as part of the Railway Stakes Day 2011 action.
Ridden by Troy Turner, who was also aboard for their third to subsequent Railway Stakes third placegetter Westriver Kevydonn in the Group 3 RJ Peters Stakes (1500m) the Saturday previous, Grey Monarch ($5) was able to beat home the Neville Parnham-trained Dempsey ($5) in the Carbine Club of WA Stakes by three-quarters of a length, while Our Ol’ Fella ($4.80) finished the same distance back again for third.
It was a strong performance by the veteran as they settled third along the fence behind early leader Wolfe Dreams, who faded to finish fourth, before pulling out a strong burst to hold off the fast-finishing Dempsey.
Haggerty was over the moon with the win by his honest galloper, who he has prepared since November of 2008.
“He always tries his heart out and can carry weight, something he’ll get a bit more of (from the handicappers) after this win,” Haggerty said.
“He ran a great race in the Peters Stakes and pulled up well, so that’s why I buttered him up again this week, whereas I’d normally space his races.
“He’s a great old horse.
“The only thing that ever beats him is luck – and maybe just a little bit of super talent, but he’s a great horse.
“He loves being there near the rail and Troy (Turner) rode him absolutely perfect there…a beautiful ride.”
Punters can continue to cool off this summer with a punt on the Perth races this weekend with the $80,000 Listed Placid Arc Stakes (1200m).
The Festival of Perth Racing then continues on December 3 with the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) before New Year’s Eve kicks off in style with the running of the second 2011 Perth Cup.
