Domesky the 2011 Ballarat Cup winner

Domesky defied a Luxbet betting drift ($5.50 out to $6.50) to pick the Listed 2011 Ballarat Cup on a dead track today.

The win gave trainer Mick Kent and jockey Brad Rawiller back to back Ballarat Cup winners with My Bentley having won the 2010 edition.

Domesky was suited by the quick pace up front set by Luxbet bolter Niptious ($101) while the strongly backed Luxbet favourite Paddy O’Reilly was  a victim of tactics.

The Robert Smerdon trained galloper was caught three wide without cover for the first 800m after being backed in from $8 to $5 with Luxbet.

His race was run by the time he hit the 600m mark, the same point of the 2011 Ballarat Cup that saw Niptious and Apprehend $81 Luxbet fold.

Rothera a Luxbet betting drifter from $4.40 to $7.50 was given a perfect ride by jockey Luke Nolen.

No horse has carried 59kg the history of the Ballarat Cup and won but Rothera went close.

He settled fifth on the fence and hit the lead at the 350m mark.

It was left to two backmarkers Domesky and Sean Baile Mor Luxbet $21, to do the chasing.

Domesky gave Rothera four lengths into the straight and Sean Baile Mor a length.

The four-year-old sprouted wings late and won comfortably on the line.

The Mike Moroney trained Tinseltown Luxbet $18 was pulled up after 300m when rider Michael Walker falsely believed the horse had broken down.

He interfered with Illustrious Blue Luxbet $61 and Boom N Zoom Luxbet $16, causing them to lose momentum and at least two lengths.

Chris Symons aboard Ulundi Luxbet ($8 into $6.50) made a run from the 800m which proved ill timed.

The light weight was found wanting from the 350m mark in the Ballarat Cup.

Domesky’s win was just his third in 19 starts adding to his best win in the Group 2 Alister Clark at Moonee Valley in March.

Kent has learned the secrets to the horse along the way.

“He didn’t have much luck early in his prep and he may have been out of his depth in the Caulfield Cup,” he said.

“We like to space his runs a bit more than we did, we ran him three times pretty quickly.

“We then gave him more time and he ran better at Flemington and obviously ran even better today.”

“He will be a better horse next year, he will have a break now and come back for better races like the Warrnambool Cup.”
