2011 Railway Stakes winner Luckygray on protest!

Luckygray lived up to his name when he became the $1m Group 1 2011 Railway Stakes winner via a protest.

While Luxbet $5.50 chance He’s Remarkable past the post first, Shaun O’Donnell rider of on Luckygray Luxbet $4 and Paul Harvey on fourth past the post Waratah’s Secret Luxbet $10, fired in a double protest.

They claimed Kerrin McEvoy on He’s Remarkable caused interference near the 600m mark in the 2011
Railway Stakes (1600m).

They alleged McEvoy, when coming off the fence, caused their defeat and while stewards agreed with O’Donnell they disagreed with Harvey.

The placings in the 2011 Railway Stakes where amended.

Earlier McEvoy used barrier one to advantage and settled He’s Remarkable sixth on the fence.

Craig Williams aboard Avienus took up an early lead but gave it up to Rocky Range while Mega Steel settled second with Westriver Kevydonn placed fourth.

Near the 600m, McEvoy made a quick move to get off the fence and caused Waratah’s Secret interference – it set off a chain reaction that stopped second favourite Ranger Luxbet $4.40 in his tracks.

Luckygray had settled with the back six on the fence with O’Donnell looking for rails runs.

His progress was impeded but once clear he finished best in the 2011 Railway Stakes cutting a four length margin at the top of the straight to a neck.

Westriver Kevydonn, who reach the lead in the straight, battled on for third.

The 2011 Railway Stakes will go down as the most controversial but the Gino Poletti trained Luckygray showed he has more than a touch of class.

His winning record can vouch for that – now seven wins in nine starts.

The son of the MM Classic winner Bradbury’s Luck boosted his prizemoney to over $800,000.

For He’s Remarkable, an entire, the 2011 Railway Stakes was the Group 1 that got away.
