Under The Eiffel wins 2011 Sandown Stakes

Caulfield trainer Tony Vasil made it the perfect spring with Under The Eiffel who picked up Saturday’s Group 3 2011 Sandown Stakes (1500m) on the Sandown Hillside.

Under The Eiffel had won his two previous spring starts in the $100,000 7News (1400m) at Flemington and $40,000 Restricted Hcp at Seymour but plans for the gelding are much bigger.

The son of Mossman was sent odds-on favourite in the 2011 Sandown Stakes with Luxbet and those who took up the offer never had a problem.

Vasil is eyeing off Queensland’s premier race the 2012 Group 1 Stradbroke Hcp (1400m) at Eagle Farm in June for Under The Eiffel.

Jockey Craig Williams settled the four-year-old outside the leader Launay.

He then bided his time and kept it together while others struggled at the 300m  mark.

Then he urged his mount under hands and heels but relaxed before the line when the Sandown Stakes of 2011 was all but over.

The 2011 Sandown Stakes win was the second of a quarter by Williams who piloted Maximus Moonard, So Swift and Hi Belle to Sandown Hillside victories.

Under The Eiffel defeated Sistine Angel and Orbit Express who both ran on well without threatening.

“He has done the job courtesy of a great ride,” Vasil said.

“He will go to the paddock now.

“He is a pretty handy horse.

“I don’t think we have seen the best of him.

“I think he might be a sneaky Stradbroke horse.

“There is probably a little bit of water to go under the bridge between now and then but that is the sort of race I really think is worth targeting with this horse.”
