WA Champion Fillies Stakes 2011 Field & Barriers

This Saturday the early Perth Summer Racing Carnival action continues at Ascot, the richest race on the eight-event schedule being the 2011 WA Champion Fillies Stakes.

A set weights race for three-year-old fillies, the $200,000 Group 3 W.A. Champion Fillies Stakes (1600m) has this year drawn 19 entries.

Last year the feature was won by the then Grant Williams-trained Dreamaway, now prepared in Victoria by Dean Binaisse, who continued on to win her next four starts including the Group 1 WATC Derby (2400m).

Williams has just one WA Champion Fillies Stakes hopeful this year with More Than Ready three-year-old Dark Miss.

Dark Miss was last seen finishing a devastatingly close second to fellow WA Champion Fillies Stakes entry Red Hot Sax in the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m) at Ascot on October 29, and is tipped as a genuine contender stepping up to the mile.

One of the big winners in the WA Champion Fillies Stakes barrier draw, Dark Miss has come up with gate two while the David Harrison-trained Red Hot Sax is wider in barrier 14.

Also drawn well for Saturday’s showdown should they accept for the final field include the Trevor Andrews-trained Absolute Cracker (barrier four),  Neville Parnham’s Burgess Queen Stakes third placegetter Almachino (barrier three) and Paul Jordan’s last-start winner Democratism (barrier six).

Along with Almachino, leading local trainer Parnham will also be represented by Pure Heaven on the rails, the smart grey Snippetson filly looking to return to form after her disappointing ninth in the Burgess Queen Stakes last start.

Meanwhile Democratism will attempt to atone for a number of close calls in the race for her trainer, Jordan having finished second with Miss Belhus (2002) and Clarecastle (2006) and third last year with For Your Eyes Only.

Other notable WA Champion Fillies Stakes entries this year include Fred Kersley’s last-start Ascot winner over 1500 metres Caiguna, the lightly-raced Shane Edwards-trained Allez Marseilles and Simon Miller’s Not A Single Doubt filly Single Spice who ran second to Bliss Street in the Group 3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) back in April.
