2011 Sandown Stakes Field & Barriers

The Sandown Stakes 2011, registered this year as The Alannah & Madeline Foundation Stakes, is one of the quartet of Group race showdowns running at Sandown for Zipping Classic Day on Saturday and a quality field of 11 gallopers have been accepted for the handicap.

Here De Angels

Here De Angels will line-up in the 2011 Sandown Stakes this Saturday

Running as Sandown Race 5 at 2:50pm (AEDT), the $125,000 Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) has two last-start winners engaged with the Peter White-trained Jungle Ruler and Tony Vasil’s Under The Eiffel, due to jump from barriers eight and nine respectively.

Eight-year-old Lion Hunter stallion Jungle Ruler is nearing the end of their career, the veteran lining up for their 101st start on Saturday.

Scratched from the greys-only race on Crown Oaks Day last week, Jungle Ruler was last seen winning the Peninsula Cup (1600m) at Mornington on October 30 and really needs a rain-affected track to be competitive.

At the other end of the age scale is Mossman four-year-old Under The Eiffel who is out for their third straight win for the season.

Runner-up in the Sunshine Coast Guineas last season, Under The Eiffel comes into Saturday’s race on the back of a Melbourne Cup Day victory in the 7News Plate (1400m) at Flemington.

Topweight of the Sandown Stakes field this year is the Wendy Roche-trained Here De Angles who will be ridden by Black Caviar’s regular jockey Luke Nolen at 58kg.

Other notable hopefuls include the Peter Snowden-trained Lonhro five-year-old Launay who won their only other start at the track by five lengths back in February last year, Rockpecker on the rails in gate one and the Mick Price-trained Tale Of The Cat seven-year-old Nine Tales.

Sandown Stakes odds, as well as markets for the day’s other features including the Zipping Classic and Sandown Guineas, are due out at Luxbet shortly.
