2011 Matriarch Stakes Gives Waller A Winning Double

After falling to the tightest of seconds on Melbourne Cup Day Vintedge has bounced back to claim the 2011 Matriarch Stakes in fine style.

It gives Chris Waller a running double on Emirates Stakes Day and also gives jockey Nash Rawiller somewhat of a consolation prize after such a tough week.

Vintedge was actually one of his horses on the Melbourne Cup program but through suspension he missed out in what was a hugely frustrating period.

Now though he’s at least got some black type glory during the carnival and he did it in a convincing manner.

Vintedge was last on the back of a hot tempo early and she was allowed to swing out to the widest part of the track.

From there she steadily started making ground before hitting the lead with 200m to go.

Challengers arose from further inside but they were never going to get there as she strode clear with 100m to go to win by over a length.

Rawiller was following her progress on Tuesday and says after that he knew he was going to be well in it today.

“Chris is a genius..she ran a tremendous race here on Tuesday and just got beaten,” he said.

“This is a race he wanted to win, black type, she’s a very deserved winner.”

The Matriarch Stakes has long been a real target for mares owners as it adds huge value to their stocks at stud.

“That’s what the breeding industry runs on,” Rawiller said.

For Waller the last hour or so has quickly turned around his Melbourne Cup Carnival and given him his best performance in Melbourne ever.

“On Tuesday I wasn’t very complimentary towards Flemington, it’s certainly changed pretty quickly in four days,” he said.

He says he never had any concerns about putting Rawiller on despite the turmoil he’s endure din recent days.

“Credit to Nash, he got her there just at the right time,” he said.

“He’s close to the best in the game.”

Vintedge paid a best price of $11.60 at Luxbet with Stole getting into second spot at a big price of $6.20.

Third home was the favourite Skyerush at $1.70.
