It was a celebration for the punters in the 2011 Hawkesbury Gold Cup today with odds-on favourite Somepin Anypin showing their class with a commanding victory in the Group race feature.
The Gary Portelli-trained Somepin Anypin had been backed right into $1.60 at Luxbet by jump time for the $150,000 Group 3 Hawkesbury Gold Cup (1600m), the four-year-old Pins gelding proving exactly why they were so short in the betting.
Handing jockey Jim Cassidy his third success in the race, the hoop having won previously with Mr. Impose (1992) and Referral (1998), Somepin Anypin fired out from their wide barrier 12 draw to hit the front early.
Setting the pace Somepin Anypin at no stage looked in trouble, cruising to the lead and maintaining that position throughout.
Coming around the turn for home the favourite kicked around the corner and started to move further forward.
Really starting to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the Hawkesbury Gold Cup field, Somepin Anypin shot away with 200 metres left to travel.
They coasted to victory and had a tidy four lengths to spare over runner-up, the Guy Walter-trained Willy Jimmy who was also second favourite in the betting and who fired up late but didn’t have the speed to really challenge.
Finishing off the winning Hawkesbury Gold Cup Trifecta, which paid $27.70 at Luxbet, was the John Thompson-trained Renewed Vitality ($12) who put in a wonderful effort throughout to finish a neck away from Willy Jimmy.
The official First Four placings were completed by Zara Dancer who was only a neck further back again.
Today was Somepin Anypin’s maiden stakes victory and their first start over the mile, the horse having now won six of their 12 career starts.
There is a chance connections may press on to contest the $175,000 Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm on December 17, a race Portelli and the owners took out with Something Anything back in 2008.
Portelli, however, is leaning towards saving the horse for a big autumn preparation.
Looking towards the autumn Somepin Anypin is shaping up as a genuine hope for one of the richest races held at the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Handicap (1600m) at Randwick on April 21, 2012.
“My preference would be to head towards the autumn but at this stage we’ll see what happens,” Portelli said.
“The Villiers is there.
“We won the Villiers a few years back with the same syndicate with Something Anything and I’m sure they’d love to win it again.”
