Winning Jockey Kerrin McEvoy a Melbourne Cup 2011 Chance with Modun?

Kerrin McEvoy, regular rider to Darley’s No. 1 trainer Peter Snowden, may have kicked Melbourne Cup Day off with a winning ride in the first, but can they claim the day’s greatest prize, the 2011 Melbourne Cup, with Modun?

In a perfectly-timed ride McEvoy continued his successful association with Flemington’s annual Melbourne Cup Day riding Applegate to victory from a horror barrier draw in the $100,000 Emirates Airline Plate (1000m).

He has now ridden at least one winner on Melbourne Cup Day every year for six years.

McEvoy is also a Melbourne Cup winning jockey having saluted aboard the Mike Moroney-trained Brew back in 2000.

Today in Flemington Race 7 – the $6 million Group 1 Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m) at 3:00pm (local time) – McEvoy is on a livewire Melbourne Cup 2011 chance with #16 Modun.

Drawn to perfection in barrier five, the Melbourne Cup field now down to 23 following the early scratching of #10 Mourayan, Modun is one of two representatives for international racing powerhouse Godolphin this year along with #15 Lost In The Moment (barrier 3 / $26 Luxbet).

Sitting as a $26 chance, equal odds with their stablemate in the 2011 Melbourne Cup odds at Luxbet, there is plenty to like about Modun’s winning chances today.

Yet to race in Australia, Modun come into today’s Melbourne Cup fresh which could be a great advantage against some gallopers that have had a very busy spring.

At their last start the King’s Best gelding claimed victory in the Group 3 September Stakes (2413m) at Kempton Park in Britain, which was the lightly-raced five-year-olds’ third victory from eight starts.
