Niwot Form Strengthens for Melbourne Cup 2011 – Norsqui Wins Race 3

Norsqui

Norsqui, who was beaten by Melbourne Cup runner Niwot back in May, has wins Flemington Race 3

The formline on Niwot heading into the 2011 Melbourne Cup this afternoon is looking stronger by the minute after Walter McShane’s progressive Tasmanian stayer Norsqui got up in the third event on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington.

Norsqui had the run of the race at big odds settling just back off the pace with cover while the work was done for him out in front.

Perfect Pecs was the early leader in the race as the field strung out over 15 lengths.

The favourite Excluded was kept at the back of the pack with jockey Nick Hall content to come off a quick tempo.

As they have done in every race today at Flemington the leaders pushed wide off the rails but it was little use as they were quickly overwhelmed from behind.

Norsqui hit the lead a little over 200m from home and was sent hard to the line by jockey Chris Symons.

It looked as if he may have gone too early but the horse kept finding a little extra all the way to the post.

Excluded was the widest runner of the lot and after balancing up he really started to fire home in the closing stages.

He simply had too much ground to make up though and he wasn’t close enough with ground just running out.

In third place it was Olympic Win with an incredible run after being posted three wide throughout without cover but still having enough to get home in a place.

This race has big ramifications for the 2011 Melbourne Cup with Niwot having beaten Norsqui in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes back in May.

That was over a 3200m trip at Flemington, the same assignment he faces today in the Melbourne Cup.

While that form looks better for later on in the day Race 3 at Flemington belongs to Norsqui and jockey Chris Symons.

Symons only picked up the ride after the Craig Williams suspension,  surprisingly the second time he’s won the event when riding as a fill in.

“I won this race a couple of years ago on Linton Street and that was a pick up ride on the morning,” he said.

The horse gave him the feel that he could handle plenty more than the 2800m as well.

“He wanted to go another lap, he ran a terrific race,” he said.

Symons has the ride of Saptapadi in the 2011 Melbourne Cup and says he’s very confident of having a big day.

“I knew I’d have a good day today, I’ve got a nice book of rides,” he said.

Norsqui was a huge $20 payout with online bookmaker Luxbet while excluded was worth $1.80 for running second.

Olympic Win was another good return if you had him for third at $6.30
