Applegate Wins Race 1 On Melbourne Cup Day – Flemington Results

Applegate has won the first on Melbourne Cup Day 2011

Applegate has won the Listed Emirates Airline Plate at Flemington Racecourse today November 1, 2011.

The two-year-old filly won the first race of Melbourne Cup Day 2011 in thrilling fashion, just overtaking second place-getter Snitzerland on the line.

Alezan Thunder ran home for third, while Rhandara held on for fourth in the two-year-old fillies restricted race.

This was the maiden start for Applegate, who won her only other barrier trail at Randwick racecourse on October 7, 2011.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy was aboard Applegate for the win, making it the sixth year in a row he has won a race on Melbourne Cup Day.

“I was just a bit unsure where Steven King might go on the outside,” McEvoy said after the race.

“She’s a nice filly going forward. She’s not just a speed filly either.

“She trailed up in Sydney and she showed nice ability.”

Trainer Peter Snowden admitted he was unsure about Applegate’s chances during the running of the race.

“I was a bit uneasy about that,” Snowden said.

“These are just two year olds racing for the first time on the straight.”

Applegate will now be send to the paddock before preparing for an autumn carnival that is expected to include the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes in February.

“I think the timing’s right to give her a spell now,” Snowden said.

“I’ll be looking at something like the Blue Diamond later on.”
