Another Big Payout In Race 4 On Melbourne Cup Day 2011

Sophies Spirit

Rough chance Sophies Spirit has held of a strong finishing Little Surfer Girl in Race 4 on Melbourne Cup Day

There’s been yet another big win on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington, this time Sophie’s Spirit getting up over 1400m in the 2011 Herald Sun Stakes.

Once again it was far from a clear cut finish with the result going to the judge with Little Surfer Girl flashing home late down the outside.

Sophie’s Spirit got the result though, Little Surfer Girl an incredibly gallant second after covering a huge amount of ground and Divorces a distant third with few excuses.

Divorces was favourite for the event after returning first up since the Brisbane Winter Carnival and she slotted into a decent spot just off the pace.

Sophie’s Spirit was pushed up from the inside draw to hold a position while Little Surfer Girl was dead last.

As they rounded the bend it was Sophie’s Spirit and Divorces that managed to shoot clear and Little Surfer Girl was the only other one that ever threatened.

Based on class you would have expected Sophie’s Spirit to drop right out of it but take nothing away from her as she battled all the way to the line.

Plenty of the credit surely belongs with jockey Glyn Schofield who shows he’s in peak touch ahead of the 2011 Melbourne Cup.

He’ll ride Hawk Island in the main event and the $100 outsider will need every bit of luck he can muster to feature at the death.

In race four at least Schofield is on the board thanks to a tough little horse that just wouldn’t quit.

“She did it tough, she was really strong right through,” he said.

He admits on the line he wasn’t sure he’d got there.

“I hope I haven’t used up my luck for the cup yet,” he said.

“She only just prevailed in the end but I was able to build up some easy sectionals.

“You need a bit of luck in this game and sometimes when it’s with you it’s with you.”

For trainer Max Hinton training a winner on Cup Day is a simply remarkable feeling.

“I thought (Little Surfer Girl) was going to grab us as it usually happens,” he said.

He credits a trip to Brisbane in the middle part of the year to rally helping her along.

“I took her to Brisbane to try and grow her up a bit for this carnival and these particular races,” he said.

From here it’ll be on to the Sandown Classic meeting before a well earned rest.

Sophie’s Spirit paid out a massive $28.90 on Luxbet with Little Surfer Girl a pretty solid $3.25 fixed price place. Divorces paid out well considering she was favourite at $2.20 best price.

If you think those odds were good that’s nothing compared to the prices offered by Luxbet week in and week out of the racing season.
